8gb ram reserved for hardware

I have a laptop with 16GB of RAM, but only 8GB is usable, while the other 8GB is hardware reserved. My system uses integrated Intel HD Graphics, which takes 4GB for shared GPU memory, but the remaining reserved memory is unexplained.

I’ve tried resetting BIOS, updating firmware, and adjusting settings, but the OEM BIOS is locked, and no memory options are available. The laptop model (ACE ELEC N141) has limited support resources, and I can't find a solution to unlock the reserved memory.

Has anyone faced this issue or found a fix for OEM-locked systems with hardware-reserved RAM?Screenshot 2025-01-16 060846.webp

Hi, welcome.

Your OS is way out of date. I would suggest moving on to 23H2.

See if this makes a difference.

Press the Win + R key to open the Run dialog box.
Type msconfig in the Run box and press Enter.
Switch to the Boot tab and click on Advanced options.
Now uncheck the maximum memory box and click on OK to save the changes.
Reboot.

You mean MSCONFIG wont open or the steps didn’t work to unreserve memory?

Are you able to open the ACE ELEC N141 and check the RAM? Is it 1 x 16GB stick or 2 x 8GB?
I'm guessing 2 x 8
You have 2.8GB in use and 5GB available. I am wondering if one of the sticks may be bad. Even though it is detected.

All are up to date, but since there is a 4gb allocation for graphics, I think the problem will have something to do with how the was ram was shared, so a way to reduce the sharing should be the potential solution

Because most integrated graphics solutions automatically adjust to use the amount of system RAM they need, for integrated graphics the Dedicated Video Memory value is completely fictitious. The system reports a dummy value simply so games see something when they check how much VRAM you have.
The amount VRAM your system reports can be modified in the registry. This doesn't actually change your VRAM - it just modifies that dummy value. You would typically increase it if a game refuses to start because you "don't have enough VRAM".

This registry item is found at HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/Intel/GMM as a DWORD called DedicatedSegmentSize, in units of megabyte.​

It's possible that this value used to do some actual RAM allocation in older Windows systems (it's certainly documented as such), but in Windows 10 & 11 it's just cosmetics.

Go to settings > system > display > advanced display > display adapter properties. What does the amount of dedicated and shared ram show?

If you got the 4GB shared ram as you stated above from this screen ignore this.


My guess, is the bios has a setting that's enabled when more ram can be configured to given to be dedicated to the integrated graphics.

You said you reset it to defaults, which should fix that though.....

Yeah I am not seeing any dedicated support page for this machine, I am trying to find the support page for your laptop for the latest updated bios.....and I am not having any luck finding a driver page

Looking into this machine more........it feels very sketchy....

Remember even on a budget you can get a better machine online from name brands that are open box or used even from somewhere like an ebay equivalent.
