A D3D11-compatible GPU is required

I'm trying to run a game, but it shows the following error:

> A D3D11-compatible GPU (Feature Level 11.0, Shader Model 5.0) is required to run the engine.

I tried changing the GPU (also installing the drivers and changing the spice settings accordingly), but it still gives the error. I don't want to try all 5 (excluding None) options for it)

So what kind of graphics card are you using now? It's a little hard to answer your question without more information.

You might get better advice if you mentioned what GPUs you've tried.

I thought that even fairly old GPUs that have current drivers support newer DX (like DX12) features in emulation. Probably with poor performance.

I'm unclear on why you're running a Windows VirtIO GPU version. (It's a software emulation package, primarily used in Linux, apparently.)

Do you know what your GPU hardware is? Even if you're using unusual drivers, I assume that the GPU will show up in Device Manager (as Display Adapter).

My bit of reading on this says it does not natively support DirectX acceleration.

The O/P's Computer information is very limited but states the base OS is NixOS (Linux) on a 'Laptop'; and the mention of Virtio GPU/'spice' settings suggests Windows 11 is probably being run in a Virtual Machine, not a bare metal installation. Not normally the best starting point for a Windows gaming setup if correct, but much more information would be required to understand the possible capabilities/limitations of the hardware/software setup and which virtualisation software platform is being used..

I failed to notice that.

I did a Google search: "is windows gaming on a VM in linux ever done?". The AI response was lengthy. It's unclear to me whether using the VM approach would be feasible for a laptop with a single available GPU.

But I'm out. This is wildly far outside of my limited knowledge. The discussion may belong in a Linux forum, but even so the OP would need to provide a lot more information to receive any meaningful help.
