Solved After changing name of user directory, I am getting "OneDrive location not found" error messages all the time.

Hello world,
I have been encountering persistent windows 10 update error since Jan, so this weekend, I did a clean install/upgrade to 11.

I registered with my old win10 pro key and used my MS account to register and local PIN for login. It created the default 5 letter dir.
I used this article to change it into my first name, a 6 letter name.

Since then, I have faced the error every time I log in or even open explorer window

I have performed all the recommended solutions provided when I search for it. I have changed the onedrive location, linked and unlinked the account, uninstalled and reinstalled the onedrive app, but to no avail. I keep receiving this error all the time. I also turned off the syncing of Desktop from the onedrive list and removed desktop from quick access. Error still persists.

Please help me get a resolution for this error. All your help is most appreciated.

Have you tried changing your user name back the original name? The best way that I know of to correct a user name is to create the new user with the name you want and give it admin rights. Once it's setup and working the way you want you can delete the first user if you want.

Thank you for replying. I am not understanding what you're proposing.
I logged in with my MS account and folder name was automatically generated from 5 letters of first name. What you are proposing is creating a non windows account and then deleting the account that is actually my windows account.

I did the same steps to my Win 11 desktop (less that 3 months old) and things went without a single glitch. I do the same on my laptop and Iam facing this.

I noticed that final step of "mklink" was missing in the link I posted. I ran that command and the errors stopped.

So, thanks for fixing the issue. "A journey of 1000 steps fails not because of the enormity of journey but just a tiny pebble in one's shoe". The constant error popups were wearing me down a lot!

I have a follow up question.
This is like some arcana. If we have such knowledge on registry is it not possible to go in and delete this dangling name once and for all? Right now we seem to have left a dangling link in and added another entry for the OS to manage to first go to the dangling link, then resolve it by checking the mklink entries.

Just a thought.

Great news. I'm glad it could help.

Usually trying to search and change all the registry entries for the old name to the new name could break things.

The link is a safer workaround to automatically redirect anything that references the old name to the new name.

MS is doing their best to make us us an MS account and I don't understand why they can't give us the option to choose our username.

Yes and no. Once the new user account is setup you can log-in to your MS account. You can also log-out of your MS account when your logged-in to your original user account. I'm glad to see you now have it working.
