Windows 11 Pro - version 24H2
I had to reinstall Windows 11 last week. Today, while reading How to manage Windows Updates with WinGet (Microsoft.AppInstaller), I realised I didn't have PowerShell. I thought that came with Windows. So, I installed it.

Then I started wondering if there are other apps or programs that I should make sure I have loaded on my computer? Any thoughts?

W11 includes "Windows PowerShell" (otherwise known as the legacy PowerShell 5.1).

Just plain "PowerShell" (otherwise known as the newer PowerShell 7) is an optional package. PS 7 does not replace PS 5.1, they are designed to work side by side, because of compatibility issues between the two different versions.

PS 7 is available from several different sources:
- GitHub as PowerShell/PowerShell​
- Windows Store​
- winget​

Hey Shawn!

I had Terminal, but not PowerShell. At least, when I tried to update it using winget, Terminal said it couldn't be found. But when I installedl it, everything proceeded normally.

Press the Windows key +X
Start Terminal (Admin) or a Command Prompt as admin. copy and paste or type

DISM /Online /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RestoreHealth and press enter. after that is done type

sfc /scannow and press Enter. This will replace any missing system files

Windows Terminal automatically detects and creates profiles for installed versions of PowerShell.

If you just installed a new version of PowerShell, simply restart Windows Terminal; the new profile should appear in the dropdown menu.
