1. Common sense and critical thinking about what one is doing are key factors.
2. Some type of imaging software such as Macrium Reflect and create a master image that does not get changed. Then another image that you can update and append to. There are some good tutorials here or on the Windows 10 forums about using Macrium Reflect. I recommend using an external USB drive and disconnecting after backups have been completed preventing any chance a Ransomware attack can get to those backups. For extremely critical data make sure you have more than one backup.
3. Windows Defender has come a long way and in most testing is on par with many of the current antivirus solutions, but it does fail sometimes on zero-day type Ransomware which is not the time you want it to fail when someone is trying to encrypt all your data. Though Malwarebytes Premium can protect your system on its own many users opt to run Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Premium alongside each other and it has proven to be a remarkably strong protection solution. The free version of Malwarebytes has no real-time protection which might be okay to simply clean up after the fact on some infections, but Ransomware that encrypts your data prevents you from cleaning up after the fact. It needs to be prevented in the first place, or have very good backups in place.
4. As many others have said though, expecting a software solution alone to protect you from all potential threats is not advisable.
5. Make sure you keep Windows up to date, add a content blocker such as uBlock Origin and Malwarebytes Browser Guard to your browsers. Both are free and work well in my experience.
6. Don't use an Admin level account as your main account.
7. Consider using Proton email or Tutanota email instead of Gmail or Outlook.
8. Consider messenger programs like Signal or Wire when messaging friends and family.
9. Consider changing to Firefox (not perfect but less marketing and tracking) instead of Edge or Chrome
10. Consider adding the Cookie AutoDelete extension to your browsers
11. Use a password manager such as Keepass, BitWarden, 1Password
