Forgive me if I've simply missed this, but I've not seen this method mentioned. I was wondering if there is some negative to installing 22H2 like this that I am unaware of.

This method requires the following:

1) Works only if installing the Pro edition of Windows, not Home.
2) It does require an internet connection.

Detailed steps:

Begin installation as always and continue up to the point where you are asked "How would you like to set up this device?". Normally you would expect to choose the option "Set up for personal use". Don't choose this! Instead, select "Set up for work or school" and then click on "Next". Click on "Sign-in options". Select "Domain join instead". Don't worry, we will NOT be joining a domain!

From here on, the rest of the installation is just the same as it was in previous versions when creating a local account. You will be asked to enter a name, password, etc. and this results in a local account being created.

I know that there are other ways to accomplish this, but I was looking for something very specific and stumbled upon this in my testing.

My personal preference is to use an unattended answer file to automatically create a local user account without needing any network connection, but I thought that this result was still interesting.

In this video, i will show you how to set up Windows 11 without an active Internet connection. Microsoft now requires an active Internet connection to set up a computer with both Windows 11 Home and Pro. That requirement became mandatory with the release of build 22557.

Sorry, but I didn't understand what you said to open command prompt.

Was it... Shift + F10 ??

Not talking about a recovery environment - clean install from boot USB. And there are some devices that do require Fn key+F key for that "facility" to work - hands on exprerience.

I have at least one computer that requires

because its Bios sets Media keys, rather than Function keys, as the default.
[I've just re-tested it to make sure it's not a memory glitch.]

I just use an autounattend.xml answer file to bypass the Win 11 requirements and to create a local user account, no network connection needed.

That's a 100% supported way of doing it.

I threaten my computer with a glass of water... it does whatever I tell it. :D

Seriously...

I did a clean install of Windows 10, then installed my software, then did an In-Place Upgrade to Windows 11.
Worked like a charm. Zero issues.

Only thing I had to do was a few personalizations.

Ghot, you have me curious. Forgive me for not quite following, but why install Windows 10 first and then upgrade to 11? Why not simply install 11 right from the start rather than go through all the extra effort and time to install 10 first?

No ridiculous requirements, like must make an MS account for example.
Also, I have a lot of OLD software, some required "patches" etc. I just figured it would be easier.

And technically I didn't do a clean install of Win 10. It was a relatively "new" install.
I had everything tweaked the way I liked etc. So I just restored to a new SSD with my Win 10 backup, then did
the In-Place Upgrade on that.

So now I have two 860 EVO 500GB SSDs. One has Win 10, and the other has Win 11.

Saved me having to deal with all the software installs, driver installs etc.
Win 10 was very new, and was running clean and tight. So, I figured, what the heck. :)

So, in short... I have two OSes, and only had to install drivers and software...once.

/edit
I could have also just updated to Win 11 and then put a Win 10 backup on the other SSD....either way, same result.
But I think the In-Place Upgrade is cleaner than the Windows update method.

Okay, I see. I guess it's simply a personal preference for me to install Win 11 directly. Maybe that's simply because I install so often that I'm looking for the easiest path possible :-). I use a simple answer file that addresses all those issues - no need to have Internet access, allows for creation of a local user account, and no enforced Win 11 requirements.

Undoubtedly, post #1 and #2 are elegant solutions, and better choices for most. :-)
