I let Windows and my software manage their drivers and updates. I've never put much stock into driver updates. That's just me, though.

Motherboard manufacturers drivers, if applicable, from their site, then Windows update.
If it is a laptop use drivers from the makers web site as a lot of laptop drivers are customised for the hardware used (especially network, web cam, audio, trackpad and GPU drivers), occasionally you find a laptop that uses off the shelf style components and Windows does a good job in most cases.
I would advise anyone not to use a driver updater app, even if it gets the drivers from a reputable source, it can overwrite a manufacturers custom driver and break functionality, just because it looks for a higher version number.

I only get drivers from their official sources. I'll never trust a driver updater. While they may work sometimes, other times they may download a generic driver that doesn't work well with your specific hardware, especially on laptops (ie. a driver updater downloading an updated Realtek Audio driver on an MSI laptop I had then the MSI sound utility called Nahimic for enhancing audio stops working because the driver is not supported). To each their own offcourse but I like only getting them from official sources.

For LAN/WLAN/Bluetooth, I get them either from Intel's site or from Realtek depending on the device I am updating. For video drivers, from nVIDIA and/or Intel or AMD directly

Like other replies, I don't use a driver updater. I rely on my equipment manufacturer (in my case, Dell) to provide specific drivers for my PC, as these are usualy 'tweaked' specific for my device, and, Windows Update.

I wouldn't trust a driver updater either. I let Windows find the drivers, then go to the manufacturer website to download the official ones if needed (some manufacturer drivers are adapted to the particular PC and not the same as the windows version - even with the same driver number). In my case it was just a graphics driver that needed to come from the computer manufacturer. Without dedicated graphics I tend to find Windows finds all the necessary drivers and latest ones and updates will appear in Windows update.

If you have some missing in W11 maybe check computer manufacturer website - you'll be able to download and install any needed. So for example I'd use the HP graphics driver for that machine, rather than the one from the Intel site (which might not be adapted for that machine).

I think you will find that most enthusiasts do not think it's a good idea to use third party updaters except maybe those released by OEMs. I've repaired computers for years and many moons ago when we had to locate every single driver ourselves there were a few times I resorted to using an updater to find some missing, vague driver but in modern operating systems, it's just not necessary anymore. I manage my own drivers using only OEM and manufacturer issued drivers, but for most users, letting windows update handle driver updating works just fine. The premise behind Microsoft managing drivers was that so many people operated on old outdated drivers or missing drivers that affected the performance of Windows 10 and 11 that MS wanted to alleviate it. Windows update is definitely preferable to a driver updater.

Yeah personally wouldn't touch any of those programs that download and install all you're drivers for you with a 20ft barge pole,aka bloatware imo, anything Windows doesn't get I do manually. It really doesn't take long and I know what I'm getting and where. Not that I'm one of those defend my pc like I'm the government kinda people, but yeah, driver downloaders..fps boosters..game optimisers are all in the same bracket for me. Bin bin bin

If you ever want proof of updates being impossible to understand, just try installing latest Intel Iris Graphics update from Intel site. You install it, and then Windows update decides to install an earlier one. The boot into Beta version and it will install a really old version, but RP gives latest version. Worse Dev version then installs a version not seen on any Intel site.

Craziest thing is I can never detect any difference between the versions anyway LOL.

It was The Drivers That MS installed that were the Problem. I stopped MS this morning from installing Drivers. So Yes Really!

Tbf the only ones I really care about are sound and gpu..everything else does what it needs itself anyway

I have Degrees in Electronic Engineering as well as numerous certifications, have been with The Insiders Group since the 2nd Win 10 build, and before that tested Windows 7, & Vista in Connect. I am not Mental and to each his own. I have built PC's used Linux and UNIX. So go your own way and let me be.

What I hope anyone that reads this thread will take away from it is...Before messing with drivers yourself consider your own expertise and how comfortable you are knowing exactly what hardware you have and trusting your ability to install proper drivers for said hardware. This applies to all drivers, but especially graphics drivers. If you have doubts, your safest bet is to let Windows update do what it's designed to do.

Can windows update ever get it wrong? For sure it can, just as WU ocassionally puts out a defective OS update. But WU updates millions of systems and the times it installs the wrong driver are not commonplace. Will WU always install the latest driver? No. It chooses what it considers the most appropriate driver for the hardware you have.

When manufacturers create new drivers they post them on their site immediately, but once the drivers are sent to windows update, it takes time to get them on MS servers, just as it takes time for all the OEM's to update their own servers with new drivers. If your system has working drivers installed, there's no rush to installing a new driver unless you have having issues.

It is a personal choice whether or not one chooses to use a third party app to update his drivers. Just know that no third party app updates as many systems as Microsoft does. Neither are third party apps infallible.

As one who custom builds, I manage my own drivers and don't use driver update utilities (except for those included with a laptop as they're able to grab the specific driver for the laptop model).
