Comparing your screenshot to my Realtek High Definition device, it looks like you have a generic Microsoft audio driver installed at 11/4/2026, not the official Realtek HD audio drivers. What is your motherboard model? Even better, use Aida64 or Speccy to see exactly which Realtek HD audio model (part number) you have and download the official Realtek drivers from the Realtek site below. For example mine is Realtek ALC887.

In that case, clear update cache and search again. I just confirmed it, I am on build 8039 yet, I haven't installed 8117. Maybe it is available for certain computers only? Mine is an unsupported 3rd generation Intel Core-i7 (2nd system specs). To be on the safe side, DON'T try to install 8246 from Windows Update. Manually download and install it from Microsoft Update Catalog. This should make 8117 obsolete and Windows Update won't install it and screw your system.

To be correct. The new baseline (as seen as the new 25H2 v2 .ISO; the official downloadable version of 25H2 at MS) is now 26200.8037. Got that one. After that came 8039, 8116 and 8117. So 8117 was an OOB for 8116. If you didn't installed it you won't get 8117 also. I had issues with my MS account with 8116. That was fixed with 8117 but it also introduced more bugs also. Audio, Hibernation. To correct that situation de-install 8117. Or go back to 8037 or 8039.

Today as expected (14-04-2026) arrived 8246. Installed it; no problems. As 8117 is now superseded by 8246 this is the new build. (I saw that 16 packages were not superseded by 8246 ones. 8x if 1 language. Could not see any audio related packages.) A 3rd gen i7 (i7-3770?) is a bit old. Even my 2nd system 6th Gen i7-6700K is old (also not supported) but I have updated my 25H2 to 8246; No issues also. So with 8246 there in no general issue that could impact any system. I would in your case install 8246 and check if your issue has been resolved. According to AI there were Audio issues with KB5086672 but I could not find an article that would confirm that... AI has a habit by mixing all kind of information from different wrong sources. So not very reliable.

Visiting Realtek's support site I saw there is a newer version of HD audio drivers (2024) than I have already installed (2017). It looks like it is suitable for all Realtek HD audio models. So upgrade to build 8246 and if you have any issues try installing the official Realtek audio drivers.

I just restarted after updating to build 26200.8246 The sound (Realtek HD audio, part number ALC887) works properly. A quick check in Device Manager reveals I still have my old (2017) official audio driver, thanks God! If I encounter any issue I will upgrade to the latest (2024) official drivers, for now "if it works, don't fix it" as wise men say.

Yesterday I installed KB5083769 (26200.8246), making a backup of the audio driver (HdAudio.sys) beforehand so I could replace the new version with my own. In the end, I didn't need to do that because the sound started working properly again. I couldn't believe my eyes, but the problem I kept running into was now fixed!

I did restart the computer, and I do have the latest driver version (10.0.26100.8246), and everything is working fine.

I can't explain what might have happened between the second installation of 26200.8246 and the installation of 26200.8117, as well as the first installation of 26200.8246.

I'll see over time whether or not the problems return.

Glad to hear that your issue has been resolved. I advised already to hold 8116, 8117 and see if things were resolved with the next real update. And it did. Prove that there was something wrong with 8117. A bit strange that not more people reported similar issues. MS is not telling us that something was wrong with 8117 yet again. I am also curious if that hibernation issue with this release is also resolved. Gonna ask the persons who ran against that problem.

Nearly forgot. With 26200.8246 again some 41 drivers has been replaced inside the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers directory. Among those also HdAudio.sys...... Maybe this new version fixed the audio issue..... Had an old 8117 one on a VM. Tried to see if there was any difference visible outside the build number and date: No. Size is the same, Boolean flags are also the same.

About one hour after my last post, I realized the issue was here again. :cautious:

I can't say exactly when it started, but the volume issue has come back, and when I unplug the headphones, the cross reappears on the sound icon.
So this is something that happens randomly, which would explain why Microsoft didn't realize there was a problem.

Yes. this one belongs to 26200.8037. Size and Booleans are also the same. You may copy the 8246 one to the 26200.8037 build (to see if it works) but that will not be the only change; You must update this 8037 PC also towards 8246 to keep everything in order. Sizes are all the same but does not mean that the code are the same also. Changing in the sourcecode (C++) a variable from a to b will not lead to a bigger or smaller file after compilation.
Would laugh if this quick fix would solve that issue...... You would have found the culprit..... 😮😆😆

Before I restore the original files, I'm running some tests with the current driver. And this driver is acting up.

When I play a video with Edge (as usual), the sound stops working. To get the sound card working again, I uninstall it in Device Manager and then reinstall it. No need to restart if Edge was closed or if no other software was using the sound card.

If I play a video with VLC, the sound works fine. Why? No idea. If I mute the sound card in Edge, now only the right speaker works.

This driver version is a disaster.

He is not experimenting. He still sit's on 8037 where things are working. He can him self decide if he want to bring it up to 8117 and replace the HdAudio.sys from 8246. (he has other systems too) No harm done. In the end he must update his system also to 8246. (will replace the same file also)

You start breaking things if you have not thought of a way out if things goes wrong. If you know what your doing it is not rocket science. After that 8117 update I would continue to update everything to 8246. In the end everybody has to do it. If not with 8246 then with e.g. 8302.... Only in last resort situations if things can't be fixed anymore you should postpone updates indefinitely. There are people that would halt updates till x-weeks. Now it's max is 5 weeks. It looks like MS will grant them that wish...

In the end it is his decision what to do next.....

I thought he already updated to build 8246 but used the old version (8037) of a specific driver file to make the sound work. From your previous post it looks like you suggested to go back to version 8037 and try the driver version from 8246. It didn't make sense. If he is already at the latest version (8246) and managed to manually replace the driver file with an older version (8037) and fixed his issue, it is not wise to experiment and go through all this trouble again.

Does this weird behavior happens only in Microsoft Edge? All other applications work fine? Then this is not a driver issue but some new setting in Edge that you have to revert to the old value. I had a similar issue with any version of Firefox from 145 and newer. They have changed the way it draws the screen and it crashed every time I tried to switch the browser to full screen. I found the solution using Google AI and I changed a specific flag.

In your case see number 3 or number 4 from this Google AI suggestion:

That is not I was suggesting. If on 8037 install 8117, try the HDAudio.sys of 8246 to check it's gone. (he has multiple systems) If no issues than HdAudio.sys is the problem. Then roll forward towards 8246. He showed his current working version that belongs to 8037. If he was on 8246 then that would be visible inside HdAudio.sys because with 8246 that driver has been renewed also. It's making no sense in this way to goto 8246 and replace the file with the 8037 one. You always move forwards not backwards.

Actually, similar issues occur in VLC and Edge, so it's hard to get a definitive answer. I'll try running the same tests on both to figure out exactly what's going on.

What about Google AI suggestions (copied below for convenience) ?

4. Adjust Edge Audio Settings
  • Type edge://flags/ in the address bar.
  • Search for "Audio Service Multi-Process".
  • Try enabling or disabling this flag, then restart Edge.

5. Disable Audio Enhancements
  • Go to Settings > System > Sound.
  • Select your output device and go to its properties.
  • Under "Audio enhancements", select Off.
