Yeah, as I said, like everything it depends - even with the files.

Anyway, I bought a Hi-Res (24-bit/192k) album (Hiromi's Move) from HDtracks, and to be honest I'm not that impressed. The album sounds very digital, whether played through JRiver or Audirvana. My physical 16-bit CD copy that I ripped in Flac sounds much more natural on both players.

BTW, I downloaded both flac and the wave versions (you get a choice), and since it's a 24-bit/192 recording containing 9 tracks averaging 8 minutes each, the flac version came in at 2.64gig, while the Wave version came in a 4.46gig!!!. Contrast the original 16-CD comes in @416meg uncompressed flac.

No doubt the app is good, as we also both agree. We're just saying (being reminded) not everything on it is going to sound great vs. other players, all other things being equal.

But, yeah, its' still impressive. For me though, it's more about the short comings I listed vs. asking price.

Huge Stanley Clarke fan here, so I have that CD, but my favorites are Rock, Peebles, and Sand (1980), and I Wanna Play For You (1979)...

Rock, Peebles, and Sand is more Jazz Rock, while "I Wanna Play For You" is half studio/half live with a mixture of funk and rock.

But yeah, for me, since ripping my collection PC, I've been able to enjoy a lot of my stuff I'd stopped playing or forgot about. Even sweeter, is I can stream from my NAS via Plex from my phone to my car so I have access there as well :)

So today I was fiddling with my DAC's built-in digital filters and was able to get my 24-bit/192K Hi-Res copy of Hiromi's Move CD a lot better under Audirvana. I'd noted earlier it sounded like crap, but dialing in the DAC's filter, smoothed things out. And it sounds much better now.

I have to say the more and more I listen to Audirvana, the more and more I'm impressed by its sound output. Of course, with a good DAC both will complement each very well.

I have all her stuff, as she's one of my favorite artists - classically trained, brilliantly creative. On her Spectrum CD she does 22 minute and 45 second version of Rhapsody in Blue aptly titled "Rhapsody in Various Shades of Blue" What you don't realize is this is a solo piece; that because of the various layers, you think you hear other instruments, but its just piano. In the end you don't realize 23 minutes have passed but do realize you want to hear it again. It's one of my favorite pieces she's done :)

Anyway, I'm not strictly about jazz, I also love some electronica and EDM music, as well R&B and rock. Just depends on my mood

What's one of your favorite artist? I know one is kind of hard to nail down, but...

Hmmm... never thought of that. For me, I just import my files into my favorite player and play from there.

As for favorite artist, I completely understand, and why I said she's "one of my favorites" :)

Was just browsing my CD's, I like 'Animal Logic' with Stanley Clarke, Stewart Copeland and Deborah Holland. Too bad they didn't make more music together!

Gald you like her. She really is brilliant. She also did some work with Stanley Clarke (Stanley Clarke Trio) called "Jazz in the Garden". Features Stanley Clarke, Hiromi, and Lenny White.

Hmmm... don't know that one. I know of Stanley, and Steward Copeland from the Police (another of my fav groups), can't place Deborah Holland.

Yeah, that group escaped me. I don't even remember seeing any of the two albums they released (just looked them up).

They weren't a big hit, more of a side project. Decent material though.
