auto restart pc after power failure

I need to have my pc auto restart when there is a power failure. I have security cameras and they don't work if the pc is off. This pc is at work. I was not sure if this is a windows thing or a bios thing.

That setting is in your bios. It's usually under a category of power or power management, but each bios is different. If you poke around in your bios you will find it.

If you want your cameras to come back on line you will have to set automatic login for windows if not already set. Here's How to Auto Log In to Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, or XP

This is telling Windows to auto-restart after a BSOD, not a power failure. As already mentioned, restart after a power outage is in the BIOS.

@Ghot Does that work for power failure or just system failure. I've always just done it in bios so maybe I'm learning something new.

I believe it works for power outage which it interprets as a system failure, also.
I remember my computers trying to restart during power failures, where the power... flickers on and off.

This is why I always have that box unchecked. Unchecking it also prevents Windows restarting after a System Failure like BSOD.

I think the ASUS BIOS' APM setting has always defaulted to power off, after a power failure.
I don't remember EVER having to change the APM settings in the BIOS.
I DO remember, always unchecking that auto-restart box, on a new Windows install.

Anyway, I wanted to mention it, just in case.


I know that during a power outage, ONLY the BIOS with it's battery backup is.... conscious, so to speak.
But I THINK that when the power resumes, that for the comp to restart, both the APM setting in the BIOS and the auto-restart setting in Windows, have to allow it to restart.

In any case, I wanted the OP to know about the auto-restart checkbox in case the BIOS setting alone, didn't do it.

It is impossible for Windows to restart the computer after a power failure and it is also impossible for Windows 10 to block a computer restart after a power failure. That is 100% a function of the computer BIOS.

During a power failure everything in RAM is completely lost and there is no time for Windows to properly shutdown and save any information to disk (unless you have an UPS). When power is restored there is only one option available - a complete cold reboot of the system which must be initiated by the BIOS because it is impossible for Windows to restart itself because the RAM was erased and there was no information regarding the state of Windows saved to disk.

If you have a UPS, typically the UPS detects the power outage and sends a signal to Windows via USB to hibernate. The UPS provides battery power long enough for hibernation to complete. When power is restored, the computer must still cold reboot and it must still be the BIOS that initiates that.

The restart options Ghot posted are only for BSODs, not power failures. All the BIOS setting is really doing is saying "Do you want me to press the power switch for you when power comes back on in order to turn this computer back on?"

Oooh outta curiosity. Which setting would you recommend? I haven't had a power cut or outage in atleast 10 years so i don't bother with these things usually. But can't hurt incase!

Damn, you're lucky. The power grid must be way better in Scotland than Texas. Mine flickers on and off during every severe thunder storm, but I live in the sticks. I have good surge protectors but I have to turn it off in bios to protect my hardware.

I live out in the countryside too, Yeah i think we're pretty lucky in the UK. Thats why ive never had to bother with anti surge stuff or backup power etc as ive seen a few that do, Guess im just lucky where i live, I know plenty of people in scotland that have had some of course but they live elsewhere. I do have an anti surge bar for plugs etc, But it just happened to be one of those i didn't get it specifically i guess!

If you have no reason for an auto restart, I recommend you set BIOS to leave the computer turned off after a power outage. That way you can turn the computer back on when you want to and watch the startup process to see if any errors appear.
