Oh, great. So, the only thing to do is pause updates before re-enabling the Internet connection, right?

Is there any way to get the downloads, but to install manually, not auto install? That way I can not install one that I don't want.

Is there a way to download updates but instal them manually, so I can not instal ones I don't want?

Every Windows Update download has an associated .MSU file that is posted. Additionally, for major OS updates, Brink always makes a note of the update release, and links to the manual installation file every time it is available.

For example: Windows 11 News

This is all of the cumulative updates for Windows for stable (not Insiders Preview) that Microsoft releases.


This is for KB5023706. If you scroll near to the bottom of the first post, you'll see this section:

Direct download links for KB5023706 MSU file from Microsoft Update Catalog:

And then the respective links for 64bit (AMD and Intel) and ARM64.

He does this for every update, so further down in the list is also the KB5022913:


So, you can try to keep abreast of them yourself by using the Microsoft Update Catalog, or, just bookmark the first link above in this post and every time you go to it you can not only see when new updates are out, but grab the manual installation files and install them - or not.

No worries - it's understandable. If someone were to try to walk me though, say, the proper procedure for taking an X-Ray, for example, I'd be out of my depth rather quickly as well.

So, let's try one more time.

When you load this site, you probably usually start out at Windows 11 Forum or else here Windows 11 Forum (You'll notice the second link is basically just moving down the page a bit from the first link - essentially, they're the same).

The very top forum is the Windows 11 News forum:



In there you'll find all the news for all the different levels of stability. You'll find news for Windows 11 updates for the regular old Windows 11, plus the preview builds (categorized collectively as Insider Preview builds, with special sub categories (Microsoft calls them channels) called Release Preview, Beta, Developer Preview, and Canary.

Now, inside this forum, you'll see neat little tags like these on SOME of the posts (not all):



The ones you want to look for are the ones that say Win Update:



But you can find them a lot better instead of scrolling through all of them by simply tapping on any one of those badges, which takes you to this link:


Now you're only seeing the regular Windows Update posts that @Brink makes. It should look something like this:



Now clicking on any of these links takes you to the thread that is about that particular update. So, for example, if we click on the top one, we are now at KB5023706 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Build 22621.1413 (22H2)

Which looks like this at the top:



Notice that in the yellow box is the Microsoft KB article linked to the update.

Now, once you're here, just scroll down until you see this section:


The part in the red box is what I told you to look for last time - It's almost always right after that blue button that says "Check Windows Update". The part in the yeloow box is the part you need to make sure you get right - most PC computers will use that version. The part in the green box is the link - click anywhere there and it will start downloading.

Once it finishes downloading, just find where the file is, double-click it (like normal program installers) and it will start and run all on its own, and Windows will get updated.

• You may be asked to close one or more programs that are currently running. I normally try to run these installers with as many of my programs closed first to minimize the chances of that.
• You may also be asked to reboot the computer once it finishes - this is just like when Windows Update wants to reboot as well.

And that is it. Now you know how to download and install Windows Updates manually, and the best part is that @Brink keeps you updated in that link all the time:


So the one(s) in the very top section are the latest ones, and will be pinned there until a newer one comes out that replaces that one - then that one gets unpinned and the new one will be pinned.

That's really all that there is to it. It's easy peasy, and once you've done a couple of them you'll be an old hand at it.

That all being said - If you're still uncomfortable with it, no worries! It's not everyone's cup of tea, that's for sure!

To block a specific update download Windows Update Show/Hide Tool (wushowhide) and hide the specific update. The website claims it works in a very old Windows 10 version, but I have used it and confirm it works in all Windows 10 and 11 versions up to 22H2.
