This tutorial will show you how to backup and restore favorites in Registry Editor in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
System configuration information is stored centrally in a hierarchical database called the registry. You can use Registry Editor to add and edit registry keys and values, restore the registry from a backup or to default values, and to import or export keys for reference or backup.
You can add registry keys you frequently check or edit to your Favorites list in Registry Editor to make it easier to open them from.
You can back up (export) your favorites in Registry Editor to save them, and restore (import) them to your account or another account to share.
Contents
- Option One: Backup (export) Favorites from Registry Editor
- Option Two: Restore (import) Favorites to Registry Editor
EXAMPLE: Favorites in Registry Editor
1 Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
2 Navigate to the registry key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below step 3)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Regedit\Favorites
3 In the left pane of Registry Editor, right click on the Favorites key, and click/tap on Export. (see screenshot below)
4 Navigate to and select where you want to save the REG file at, type a name you want for the REG file, and click/tap on Save. (see screenshot below)
5 This REG file is your Favorites backup. You can now close Registry Editor if you like.
This will add all favorites from the REG file to the existing Favorites of the current user.
While this will not delete the existing Favorites of the current user, it will replace any existing favorites with the same name in the REG file.
1 Double click/tap on the exported REG file from Option One.
2 If prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes to approve.
3 Click/tap on Yes to confirm. (see screenshot below)
4 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)
That's it,
Shawn Brink
