Sometime today my pc switched most sites. folders and internet backgrounds to black. It so widespread, I am at a loss. I have checked personalisation and settings etc - ????? Even Win 11 forum has turned black. Fixed forum , switched to light, it was on dark)

First thing I would check : Start -> Personalization -> Colors. Check Choose your mode. Check to see if it's set to Dark. You can change the option there to light or custom.

You didn't recently install the new Powertoys ver 0.95 did you? If so sounds like the new Light Switch option strikes again.

yes I did, yesterday. Will delete now and reboot. I installed it to 'kill' windows switch.

reinstalled power again, and unset light switch and rebooted. I also set manual time of light switch to oo.oo and oo.oo. Some sites still black, eg: facebook and Firefox. some net sites have a white page with black tops. But when I go into Firefox settings, black. forum still black. fixed firefox in settings. It appears that everything that is darkened, I need to fix manually.

Well that's no fun having to manually clean up the mess now. Seems that new Light Switch feature caught a lot of people by surprise. And why they enabled it by default is beyond me. For what it's worth the new Peek feature works awesome when you have time to try it out.

When you select a document or picture in file explore you can hit ctrl spacebar and get a quick look at the document. Great if you want to quickly view the contents of multiple docs. You can also copy from the viewed document.

I'm on W11 home as well, works fine on my machines. Make sure Peek is set to on.

If the graphics driver doesn’t fix it, try turning off hardware accelleration:


Google Chrome / Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based)
  • Open the browser.
  • Go to the menu:
    • Chrome: Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner > Settings.
    • Edge: Click the three dots (…) in the top-right corner > Settings.
  • Scroll down and click System (or search "hardware acceleration" in the settings search bar).
  • Find the option: "Use hardware acceleration when available".
  • Toggle it off.
  • Click Relaunch to apply changes.

Mozilla Firefox
  • Open Firefox.
  • Click the three lines (≡) in the top-right corner > Settings.
  • Scroll down to the Performance section.
  • Uncheck: "Use recommended performance settings" (this reveals more options).
  • Then uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available".
  • Restart Firefox.

Yes it's invisible and has been a long time. I don't remember exactly when the little shadow thingy for peek disappeared. You can still click in botton ight corner for peek. I didn't use it anyway. Instead I make a shortcut for "show desktop" and pin it to my taskbar. It gives my mouse a bigger target.
