Botched CrowdStrike security update breaks Windows worldwide, causing BSOD and crashes

Multiple companies worldwide are currently forced to suspend their operations due to a faulty cybersecurity update from CrowdStrike. The update is taking down thousands of Windows computers, causing them to boot loop and crash to a blue screen of death.

Affected companies include banks, airlines, TV channels, and more, and some of them are forced to halt their jobs almost completely, with most Windows PCs not working due to the Falcon Sensor agent from CrowdStrike, a system that monitors network activity and prevents cyberattacks. One user from Malaysia said on Reddit that 70% of their laptops are now stuck in a boot loop.

CrowdStrike issue impacting Windows endpoints causing an error message on a blue screen
Microsoft has identified an issue impacting Windows endpoints that are running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent. These endpoints may encounter an error message on a blue screen and experience a continual restarting state.

We have received reports of successful recovery from some customers attempting multiple restart operations on affected Windows endpoints.

To mitigate this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory
  3. Locate the file matching “C-00000291*.sys”, and delete it.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Recovery of systems requires a Bitlocker key in some cases.

It isn’t like this hasn’t happened before, where airports and the likes have shut down due to cloud issues. One would think they would, by now, have a backup solution.

And it’s just one more reason not to abolish cash.

I was live, online, with Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM EDT. I was also active online with Microsoft 365 and OneDrive throughout that time. I did not experience any problems.

Cash is a separate issue. Nobody was able to be processed at a terminal. Everything freezes. Systems should be able to run offline and merge when back online again.

It’s not just about airports, our major supermarkets weren’t able to sell food etc. Stores closed doors.
I remember when you could buy stuff at a store without a card. And kids behind the counter didn’t have to use their phones to work out how to give you change from $100 when you spent $40.

Workaround stated

There is a faulty channel file, so not quite an update. There is a workaround...

1. Boot Windows into Safe Mode or WRE.

2. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike

3. Locate and delete file matching "C-00000291*.sys"

4. Boot normally.

Memories of 'Y2K'​

Quite a few people in our comments have mentioned the outage has shades of "Y2K".
For those of our readers too young to remember, that was when — in the year 1999 — there were widespread fears of a technological catastrophe because old computers formatted the date with just the final two digits of the year, rather than the full four-digit year.
There were worries this glitch would turn into a full-scale meltdown as the clock ticked over into the year 2000.
Companies rushed to make sure their systems were "Y2K compliant".
Thankfully the problems reported on January 1, 2000 were pretty minor.
But this was in a time when cash was still in widespread use, before "tapping" was the preferred currency.

CrowdStrike might really take a hit cause of this. To bad - since it's been deemed a top security solution in the corporate world - most popular recommendation (it's what I've been recommending as well...:poop:). Even Intel went for Crowdstrike (tho, maybe not paired with Windows - so they're probably safe).
