Botched CrowdStrike security update breaks Windows worldwide, causing BSOD and crashes

Multiple companies worldwide are currently forced to suspend their operations due to a faulty cybersecurity update from CrowdStrike. The update is taking down thousands of Windows computers, causing them to boot loop and crash to a blue screen of death.

Affected companies include banks, airlines, TV channels, and more, and some of them are forced to halt their jobs almost completely, with most Windows PCs not working due to the Falcon Sensor agent from CrowdStrike, a system that monitors network activity and prevents cyberattacks. One user from Malaysia said on Reddit that 70% of their laptops are now stuck in a boot loop.

CrowdStrike issue impacting Windows endpoints causing an error message on a blue screen
Microsoft has identified an issue impacting Windows endpoints that are running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent. These endpoints may encounter an error message on a blue screen and experience a continual restarting state.

We have received reports of successful recovery from some customers attempting multiple restart operations on affected Windows endpoints.

To mitigate this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory
  3. Locate the file matching “C-00000291*.sys”, and delete it.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Recovery of systems requires a Bitlocker key in some cases.

As for the article in the OP... I think CrowdStrike will be OK.
If one bad update could kill a company... Microsoft would have been dead 100,000 times over. :cool:



Note: The only real problem I have with MS is that they seem to have disbanded their quality control departments.
Someone at MS decided that WE would be a much cheaper alternative.

Could be, I know when Houston had the Hurricane come through 2 weeks ago, 2. something million without power. Without any power folks couldn't buy gas or dry goods at the local markets. So yes! cash is still king when you have no power.

During power failures, it's amazing how many retailers don't know that you can just multiply the item price by 1.07 to get the item price with the sales tax already included. :-)

You just go in and give them your... watch (or whatever), and they give you cash. No internet required. :-)

Things are really bad:

- flights on hold or canceled, not to mention the chaos in airports all over the world
- businesses temporarily closed/unavailable
- hospitals relying on computers - which are temporarily unavailable (maybe even some deaths as a result)

That's just it... CrowdStrike didn't have a bad reputation (quite the opposite). While Microsoft got away with it - for most part (lost some people to OSX or Linux) - cause of it's worldwide monopoly (kinda like a Hydra - you cut one head 2 others emerge).

Also, it's the corporate/enterprite world (where the real life monsters live & prosper) - who suffers cause of this human error... Not just couple of hundreds of home ussers (simple peasents by comparision)- who have to reset/reinstall their Windows or take their system to a local service - cause of some update going wrong.

Maybe not enough to kill it, but its reputatin - will take a hit.

They immediately took responsibility. They immediately set out to rectify it, all in the same day and first few hours of the incident.
If anyone needs to be held responsible for anything debilitating it should really be company and services system administrators for not having backup systems and processes in place.
Just my opinion of course.
