Botched CrowdStrike security update breaks Windows worldwide, causing BSOD and crashes

Multiple companies worldwide are currently forced to suspend their operations due to a faulty cybersecurity update from CrowdStrike. The update is taking down thousands of Windows computers, causing them to boot loop and crash to a blue screen of death.

Affected companies include banks, airlines, TV channels, and more, and some of them are forced to halt their jobs almost completely, with most Windows PCs not working due to the Falcon Sensor agent from CrowdStrike, a system that monitors network activity and prevents cyberattacks. One user from Malaysia said on Reddit that 70% of their laptops are now stuck in a boot loop.

CrowdStrike issue impacting Windows endpoints causing an error message on a blue screen
Microsoft has identified an issue impacting Windows endpoints that are running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent. These endpoints may encounter an error message on a blue screen and experience a continual restarting state.

We have received reports of successful recovery from some customers attempting multiple restart operations on affected Windows endpoints.

To mitigate this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory
  3. Locate the file matching “C-00000291*.sys”, and delete it.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Recovery of systems requires a Bitlocker key in some cases.

My PC's do NOT BSOD, so that really threw me for a loop!!!
I immediately shut down my PC, changed to a different SSD, with Windows 11/Pro/64 on it, reconnected to the Server and finally got my download file. No more BSOD's.

Today, I checked my SSD's for the \CloudStrike\ directory, and I don't have it!
So, something must have downloaded from the File Server that caused my PC to BSOD.
That's the best explanation that I've got.

May it never happen again!

It's not just Rust. Rather, it's both Java and Rust. Right now, as a matter of fact Google also are moving away from C/C++ in favor of Java and Rust. A lot of people still don't have any idea what Java is, though. They usually think it's mainly just another programming language. The reality is that Java covers a very wide range of technologies, based heavily on an exceptionally long list of proven standards, yet constantly continuing to evolve, and, the Java language (Java lang) represents less than a few percent of what it is. Spring Boot has become pretty hot as an example. (Just don't expect it to also be hot on any Windows related forum... :D)

It could be it's done on purpose too since remember a bug is a feature and a feature is a bug so new versions will be out later. If they released everything bug free, they will not need new updates. And this is free publicity even though it might be bad.

LOL, yes and when you get audited after some sort of malicious breach and say "well it's a critical box and thus we don't put an AV on it because we have to ensure it's running", that's going to be a fun conversation.

yeah I am confused. We have to meet security compliance. Maybe my parent company making those decisions screwed up somehow but an antivirus needs to be able to update, you cannot possibly screen every single update that comes from your AV. That kinda defeats the purpose of the protection if you delay it.

This does not happen once a year? Your telling me antivirus companies causing massive failures like this every single year? Where?

I agree that updates on the network should not be applied across the board. But I have never heard of someone stagnating their antivirus updates across the company.

I am not sure how that would even work. Antivirus updates more often a day than the time you would need to test them all. They are also cloud based streaming updates.....

If your talking program versions updates, that is another story. But that wasn't what happened here.

From what I understand, this was a driver update that was not included in the patch management and was pushed out to all machines via cloudstrike themselves. I cannot find anything or any source showing this update was able to be tested first on companies ends before pushing it out. It seems it was instantaneous with no approval.

If you use crowdstrike and were able to deny this "update" I would love to know.

I distinctly remember that before all or many PCs got upgraded to Windows 95, that was like a crime!
