C drive nearly full, why?

Thanks Winuser and badrobot. Disk Cleanup did make a small amount of disk space free, as did Junk Files Cleaner in Revo Uninstaller.

It looks as if it is the 186.8Gb in system volume information which is the cause of my low free space.
Those look like old System Restore points to me. CCleaner has a nice facility for seeing what your current set of Restore Points looks like, and it lets you delete old ones that you don't want.

I am not sure if deleting these files, if I could find them, would cause a problem.
This includes all windows backups, like system restore points, but also previous file versions. You can use this to see details:
Code:
vssadmin list shadows
Then you can use this to remove them all:
Code:
vssadmin delete shadows /for=c: /all /quiet

Those look like old System Restore points to me. CCleaner has a nice facility for seeing what your current set of Restore Points looks like, and it lets you delete old ones that you don't want.

Thanks, I have tried that but it seems to make little difference, and there are only 2 restore point if I look in Settings, but still 15 files, 10 of which have identifiers instead of names.

So they are recent.

Download and install Everything:
Thanks, I have downloaded Everything and run it but all it seems to do is give the same information as TreeSize Free.

I copied the largest of the files in System Volume Information into Everything and all it does is show the same information as TreeSize, except that it does show the time when the file was modified. Right clicking on the file name in Everything gives an option for Read Extended Information, but that did nothing.
I have also tried reducing the amount of disk space used for system protection to 157Gb and that has reduced the number of files in System Volume Information to 11 and File Explorer now shows 178Gb free.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.
