Well, depending on what you have installed and configured, it's just a wee bit more complicated than that! :think: You also have to install all the applications again, not to mention do all the individual configuration. That usually takes a whole lot longer and with more hands-on time than installing Windows from scratch.

Well, I'm making an assumption here, but usually most novices don't attempt to install applications on different logical drives.

Yes I believe all my 'important apps' for Windows/ Dell are on my C: drive.
I'm expecting an enclosure today. Will be using Macrium to clone since I have it loaded anyway.
Hoping everything is straight forward. I was looking at my C: and see the format ? is GPT , is that going to OK ?
I'm assuming I will not need a rescue USB to boot ?

I think it would be VERY prudent to have a rescue USB prepared, especially if you don't have another machine to build one if you need it. Since I have half a dozen machines I could use, having the current rescue USB is much less important to me.

If you're going to make a Windows 11 Rescue USB, I'd use a UEFI boot drive formatted with FAT32.

If you do a clone, there's a good chance the computer will boot from the new drive. If not there are post about how to get your computer to boot from the clone. Plus I'm sure that others will post here about how to get your computer to boot. Once you get your computer booting you may have to use a program such as MiniTool Partition Wizard (the free version) to expand the C: partition to use all of the drive space.

I would leave the old disk in the laptop and connect the new disk in the USB enclosure. Boot Macrium with both disks connected. You probably can plug the USB later, but I have seen cases that is not always detected, so you better have it already connected before you boot. Select to clone your disk in Macrium. If the new disk already has any partitions, you must remove them and leave it unallocated. Drag one-by-one all the partitions from the original disk to the new disk in the order they appear. When you have dragged the Windows partition (larger), right-click and select move/resize. Calculate the space you need for the rest partitions and leave about that space at the end. The Windows partition should take the whole space except the size you left at the end. Drag the rest partitions in the order they appear. Click to apply the changes. Shutdown the laptop and swap the disks. Boot with the new disk. Congratulations! You have successfully replaced your old disk with a new.

so , glad I didn't buy beer before I tried this or I would be C.U.I. ( cloneing under influence )
I only have a USB 2.0 and it took 3 hours :(
please tell me I don't have a big problem... I'm at the end of cloneing and everything was successful up until the very end.
Macrium is is showing globalroot/device/harddisk volume shadow copy clone successful, GPT success ,
but the last thing before closing it is showing ' closing VSS please wait ' , and I have been waiting about 15 minutes .
I'm afraid to close...

Not a good sign, there's no reason that VSS on the source drive should take a long time to close. Macrium has had a long history of issues with the VSS service, do an Internet search and the issues go back ten years.

Did nobody notice that Lizzrd's treesize screen shot (post 34) showed the drive as 67GB - it was 103 in Disk Management (post 11). Where did 36 GB go?
