Solved Canon printer question

I have used this printer in a room removed from the router area -- for 2 years. No problem. All of a sudden, it does not want to print from that location-says the signal is too weak. I have moved it to a closer location and reinstalled it. It is now working. The issue/question I have -- dumb but don't know this stuff - I don't want to keep it in this new location as it is my living room. If I unplug it and move it back to old location until I'm ready to print again (from new location), does that kill the installation. I kind of doubt it but want confirmation. Thanks!!

No. It should be fine. Only if the wireless settings change will it need setting up again.

Just to elaborate. It would be no different to turning the printer off.
The only way the wireless settings would change is if you reset your router or if you reset your printer. Or if something happened to your Windows settings.
I’d advise to always have the printer turned on no matter where you move it to, at least not turned off for any prolonged periods of time (many days)

Oh - just read your finished post. I do turn it off for days at a time and only turn it on as needed. So that's not good??? I can leave it on as recommended but it seems like a waste of electricity...no? Thanks again.

Does it not go into standby mode?
If you’re used to turning it off and the relationship between the printer & Windows 11 has never been compromised, then you should be just fine to continue doing so, Patsy

Sure, but with most printers it’s generally on by default. But there would be a setting for it. It basically puts the printer (like other devices) into a kind of sleep mode so it only fully turns on when a request is made.

What’s the exact model of the printer, Patsy?

Generically for a Canon, to put a Canon printer into standby (sleep) mode, you can typically press the "Energy Saver" button on the control panel or navigate to the printer's settings to enable Auto Sleep. The exact location of the button or setting may vary depending on your specific printer model.

It is the TS3522. I don't see such a button. Looked in settings - didn't see anything. I think I will just turn it off when I am finished with my printing. Thanks again for your good help. I am so happy it is up and running.

Yeah that’s cool, you need to do what works for you

Regardless, I did some digging but hadn’t had a chance to reply about the Auto Power settings before reading your last comment.

If you want to do it using the setup/screen display on the printer:

Does the menu screen on the printer turn off when left idle? If it does the printer is going into sleep mode. I have a Brother laser jet printer that I leave on all the time. I don't turn it off because all of the devices connected to my local network has access to it. That includes my son's computer and iPhone. If you rarely use the printer and you don't have other people that need access then turning it off to save electric is a good idea.

There is probably no way of Patsy knowing as she said she manually turns the printer off.
But I believe on that printer, the LCD screen is always dark. It’s an older model.

Indeed to all statements. New question arises about same printer - if you will indulge me. If I connect the printer using a USB cable, rather than a wireless connection, is the router signal strength as critical to the operation? I would really like it back where it was rather than my living room - I can move it back and forth but would sort of like to avoid that. If answer is no, then I will do that. Thanks everyone...

Hi Patsy. If you set the printer up with a USB cable then you don’t actually need wireless. The USB cable is a direct connection between the printer and the PC as is a wireless connection. One connection type isn’t reliant on the other.

Wireless is just very popular & convenient because it doesn’t require cables.

I wonder why it worked for two years without any problems. My first thought is something wrong with the Wi-Fi card in your laptop. How many bars for the Wi-Fi show on the Taskbar? If you have a weak signal I can think of two easy solutions that may work but they're not free. Number 1 is a USB Wi-Fi adapter and number two is adding a Wi-Fi extender.

Edit: I just thought of another possibility. Have you made any changes with other electronic devices in your house? Such as relocating something or buying something new. This can cause interference with your Wi-Fi.
