Can't connect to a shared folder anymore


SysPrep would work, but it takes a lot longer than the other solutions suggested, especially a dedicated SID-changing tool.

In this case, it's not recent Windows updates causing an issue. I've said it many times and people are probably sick of reading it, but if you have duplicate SIDs, you've been doing something wrong all along. That's not new.

Only if any network drives started out as clones of another network drive.

So seeing this notification reminded me of this thread.

It ended up being on my end that the vendor had cloned them haha so they did have duplicate sids which I was not expecting.

Apparently they went from 23h2 to 25h2 and 24h2 was when that check was put into place.

So yeah, had to change it via sysprep.

Beware that you don't change to much. Don't fiddle to much arround. By fiddling with policies and registry setting you can invertible introducing problems which were not before you started changing things. Making searching for it's reason more and more complicating. First thing is to find out the reason why. I hope you will remembered what you have changed, didn't work and change it back again. (Would by wise to make a backup at this moment where you can turn back to...)

SMB 1.0 is not needed for this. In the optional features; "support for SMB 1.0/CIFS for sharing of files" should be turned off. This feature is superseded by the newer "SMB direct" function. SMB 1.0 was there for backwards compatibility reasons for old device. Is deemed as not secure anymore. So turned off by default.

Check your Windows credentials inside Configuration screen - Useraccounts - reference management - Windows Credentials. If you have normal connections before check under windows references if those are still there or gone. You can add them if you want. Known must be IP-address, Username and password.

Never use quest access. That is to unsafe to implement. Anyone can access devices with standard refences. Inside Windows; compmgmt.msc. Check that every account is disabled expect your own. Check if there are links, external devices, IP address which you can give a ping to see if it returns a response first. Check if network card(s) are turned on or are blocked by the firewall. Start as low as possible before you go up to the next level above it. Starting at the top (policies, registry etc.) is not an good idea. You will surprised how lower thing can block things if they are not checked first.

OH believe me, I made them fix it. I wasn't touching that mess. Their systems problem, not my problem.

Not my fault they didn't do it properly. It doesn't surprise me either, the more I looked into the vendors stuff the worse it was.

Absolute joke.

Regarding duplicate SIDs, I saw this over on Ask Woody. Doh!

After the September Windows Updates killed my network shares, I discovered that three of the machines had matching SIDs. You helped me with the Microsoft fix for the group policy. Thank you for that!

I just bought three more computers from DellRefurbished.com, and unfortunately, they are still sending out units with duplicate SIDs.

As you would expect, I opened a case in January with Dell Refurbished, and their response was an offer of a discount on replacement machines since they were out of warranty.

So, they are still sending out machines that are lacking in their Windows cloning process. Disappointing!

Knowing what I knew about the earlier debacle, the first thing I did after activating Windows was to check the SIDs on the new machines. Finding the duplicates, I then ran Sysprep to fix the issue. Since it was before any other set up, there were no side effects in running Sysprep.
