I use CCleaner 5.78 I installed it offline, and I blocked it and it's updaters in MY firewall. And... since it was purchased by Avast, I also "added" these lines to my HOSTS file (which "blocks" them)... C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS...

That seems ok. Blocked CCupdate.exe in windows firewall outbound rules

Doesn’t need the internet unless you’re driver updating. Firewall it. If you want one of the versions I mentioned above, let me know.

The version that refused to run without updating is v6 . Possibly any of v5 will work with ccupdate.exe blocked.

Maybe the v5 were before the takeover by Avast made a pig's ear of it.

Wise disk cleaner: menu icon top right->settings->exclusions, cookies.

Edit: For now I have ccleaner 6.xxx portable(last version). Automatic update is disabled and notify me of an update enabled. When I launch ccleaner it notifies me of an update, I choose remind me later, and it works I can use ccleaner without updating it.

I use 6.39 portable and delete the X64 folder as that is what contains the updater plus all the other bloat.

I only keep these files and nothing is asking me to update to 7.

But when Wise is closed, is the service deleted?

I'll probably use Wise Disk Cleaner Portable and see what happens with this service. Of course, if this software is like Wise Care 365 at the service level.

I deleted the Wise Care 365 service from the command line.
Wise Disk Cleaner Portable doesn't create a service.

After I saw CCleaner 7.0 force install itself with no portable version offered I ended up deleting it and just going back to Wise Care 365 portable. I thought about staying with the old CCleaner 6.39 but I don't like staying with old outdated utility software for long term. New owner Avast has been getting a lot of negative feedback and admitted it's watching it's numbers drop in 7.0 users and may keep a possibility open for a ver 7 portable in the future. The new user interface and altered functionality have been described as confusing, ineffective, and difficult to use as well.

I've used CCleaner for years and except for a few glitches along the way, I've been very happy with it. But after reading the horror stories on their Community forum about version 7, I have decided to stay with version 6.39. I'll wait to see if they make any improvements. They really went downhill since Avast bought Piriform.
