Change App Default for Files/Photos Copied from S23

I recently purchased a Samsung S23. When I access files on the phone though my Windows 11 laptop, they are in Adobe format. I do not like Adobe and would like for them to be in a different format so I can easily look at them. In other words, change the default viewing app from Adobe. I cannot find a way to do it on the S23, but is there a way to change the default on my laptop? When I right click on the image on my laptop, there isn't an option "open with" as shown below.

I don't own a Samsung phone, but the way I read THIS ARTICLE if you own a S23, you're locked into using Lightroom. I know nothing about Lightroom either, but according to

Lightroom can convert photos to other formats. Whether this feature is part of the premium Lightroom or the free app, I can not say for sure.
This article also says it can.

My guess is that they are in a format that your other photo apps can't read. If you know the format you can do a search to see if there are other programs that will open the pictures. I have an S22+ and I have to admit that I was happier with my old Samsung phone. If I didn't use it to do the free phone upgrade from AT&T I would go back to it. The best phones I ever had was the Windows phones. I wish MS had put more effort into trying to make them a success. IMHO, The phones didn't fail MS. MS failed the phones.

I just thought of something else you can try. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps and at the top try searching for the file extension and see if there are any other programs you can choose from.

I found this article from PC magazine. It seems to explain the problem but doesn't really offer a solution appart from lightroom

The formats used by photoshop are standards for professional use, ( I personally prefer to work with the Raw .DNG format, developed by adobe but like the other adobe formats released as open formats)

There are a number of formats that are usable in non Adobe applications one of the better ones is the open source Irfanview which has basic raw adjustment and conversion capabilities

this is totally free to use and also has a wide range of conversion plugins to produce multiple formats - other plugins can add functionality to the base application.

The application's look may be a little dated but the developers concentrate on function over form, which these days is quite refreshing


The range of supported formats in Irfanview is a legend of the PC industry and although I have systems full of expensive commercial software there is also the essential copy of Irfanview

Gosh ... thanks for all the replies folks ... much appreciated. Ironically, somehow the photos are now jpeg which is viewable on my laptop. I really can't say what fixed the issue. After trying various ways to convert to jpeg, it seemed to work suddenly. I believe all is fine now. Thanks again for all the helpful replies.

Just a side note ... the "free exchange" for an S23 is a complete farce. I took my A51 phone into an AT&T store expecting a free S23 for my A51 Samsung as indicated by their commercials and website. Wrong! They prorate the exchange based on the model. Since my phone would not turn on, they would not accept it. The commercial and their web site states the trade is a Samsung phone in ANY condition. Very misleading advertising IMO. Then I looked online to see about a trade if I could repair the A51 ... a whopping $5! So, I could spend the money to repair my A51 and get $5 whole dollars back. Yea AT&T!

You don't have access to all the settings when you are browsing a phone's contents. You must copy at least one image to a local folder (such as on your desktop) and then right-click, go to Open with and change it from there. It then should change for also when browsing the phone contents.
