This tutorial will show you how to change LibreOffice document types to always save as Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 file extension formats by default for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

LibreOffice is a powerful, free, and open-source office productivity suite developed by The Document Foundation. It was forked from OpenOffice.org in 2010 and has since become one of the most popular alternatives to proprietary office suites like Microsoft Office.

LibreOffice includes several applications that make it the most versatile free office suite on the market:
  • Writer: A word processor with extensive formatting and layout capabilities, similar to Microsoft Word (.docx).
  • Calc: A spreadsheet program that offers advanced data analysis, charting, and decision-making features, comparable to Microsoft Excel (.xlsx).
  • Impress: A presentation software that allows users to create multimedia presentations, akin to Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx).
  • Draw: A vector graphics editor for creating diagrams, flowcharts, and other graphical content.
  • Base: A database management tool that integrates seamlessly with other LibreOffice applications.
  • Math: An application for creating and editing mathematical formulas.
LibreOffice uses the Open Document Format (ODF) as its native file format, which is an open standard widely adopted by governments and organizations worldwide. It also supports a wide range of other file formats, including those used by Microsoft Office, ensuring compatibility and ease of transition for users switching from other office suites

Here's How:

1 Open LibreOffice.

2 Click/tap on Tools on the menu bar, and click/tap on Options. (see screenshot below)
