It was very weird, but something glitched SuperAntiSpyware and the screen flashed, then it broke. Noth9ng seemed to work to fix it so I stupidity reset Windows 11. Yes, even an old computer "spert" gets stupid at times and I was tired and blurry eye'd, so stupid I did. I wished "refresh" came up. I have never had one of those programs eat up a registry entry before, but it did. Anyway, the fix stopped working with 22H2.

Here is a similar workaround to the Control Panel trick. I think the loss of the ribbon is the price to pay for getting tabbed functionality.

It doesn't bother me as I'm a long time Directory Opus user.

I like the new File Explorer. Especially after I got it set up for how I like to use it. There's a lot more power and features than I first thought. I now appreciate the more streamlined interface.

What steps did you take to get it working how you like it? I loath the new FE. I’d be grateful to try your method, any method other than how it works now, especially the left tree.

I changed the middle section on the left side to display only "Downloads". I don't care to keep a long list of "Favorites".

I used a setting in Options to change start up to display my OneDrive "Gary - Personal" section when it opens, so I don't have to mess with finding that first. All my data is kept in my OneDrive folder and mirrored in real-time in cloud OneDrive, so that's my front-and-center area.

I've learned to really like the way Windows 11 has changed to icons for Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Share, and Delete. It really is a lot more efficient than searching a menu list for the names of those actions. It just took a while for me to make the mental change, but now I would never want to go back to the old menu.

Thank you. I’m confident that it is user error as I am not yet understanding how FE works, I’m a bit ignorant when it comes to change and I think I fight it a little. There are some videos in this thread explaining FE, I should watch them.

Since we can no longer get the old file explorer back, a lot of folks choose to use an alternative instead of, or in additiotion to, file explorer. This article describes some of the available file explorer alternatives. The 10 Best Windows File Explorer Alternatives and Replacements

I like XYplorer or Explorer++ as both are free portable apps so there's no installation. That makes it easy to see if you like it or not.
Personally, I use Explorer++. I copy it's portable folder to the root of C and pin its executable to my taskbar right alongside my file explorer icon and use either depending on what I'm going to do.

@antspants I single click to open an item. When I first got explorer++ it aggravated me that I had to double click to open. I finally found the option within explorer++ that changed it from double click to single click. If that applies to you, to change it , within explorer++ go to tools>options>files & folders tab.
