hello I have a query I would like to ask i have a 128gb hard drive for c drive and have 57gb left can I use the compact os command to get more space or am I okay with what I have I only just found this out today and is it okay to use

It looks like you would save less than 5GB compacting the OS.

I would start by uninstalling any apps you're not using.

Then, run Disk Cleanup and see how your free space is.

I have a 1 TB drive and have only used 48GB.

I keep it pretty clean, and archive old stuff to a removable drive.

Takes less time to scan for malware, and backup as well.

My gaming/streaming system has two NVME drives:

Main/System: 500gb with 127g used (OS, LibreOffice, and most apps)
Gaming: 2TB with 1.5TB used (Steam, Battle.net, and various games along with mods)

If you can, I would try to get a 500GB drive just for your OS and apps. I have no need to compact my OS drive. I feel that 500GB is about as small as you can work with without having to remove/uninstall. CompactOS won't make a major difference on your system drive.

If you have other drives and space is really not a consideration, then I don't see why you would enable it. A couple of restore points will take up that much space.

Compact OS is a built-in Windows feature that compresses core operating system files to free up several gigabytes of disk space without removing personal files or apps.

Modern CPUs decompress files instantly, making the speed difference on solid-state drives (SSDs) negligible for everyday tasks.


Enabling Compact OS comes at the cost of performance due to an increase in CPU usage (e.g., longer boot process, slower app launch times).

This is most noticeable in older or underpowered hardware.


Sacrificing raw performance isn’t as critical as storage you can enable Compact OS.

That is just for OS, compressing the whole C would gain a little more without consequence.
LZX would gain the most, but it has to be done regularly and can cause lags, even on NVMe.

I second that. Try Disk Cleanup with "Clean up system files". Let us know if it helps. Worst case it doesn't buy you much back but it can't hurt.

I guess the only point is that you know your disk is as "clean" as Windows thinks it should be.

Compact OS will reduce the size, it does this by compressing many of the system files. Of course, this incurs some penalty when you access those files to uncompress them. The speed of your processor will have something to do with the amount of performance impact you'll see.
