Creating a scroll lock key

My HP laptop doesn't have a scroll lock function. In my old laptop I just hit the keys "fn + K" and that activates scroll lock. Is there a way to program that function in my laptop without having to download any bloatware? I know I can change what the function key does with my F# keys. Normally it activates whatever the key does like control volume or screen brightness but I was able to get it so pressing F6 activates F6 without muting my sound.

This is important for gaming.

It can be different letter keys, depending on the model. What model is your HP?

Can you upload a photo of the label under the laptop with the model details? Or at least a photo of the keyboard so we can spot the key combination for you.

PS: Why do you want the Scroll Lock for? It is rarely used today.
You could try the FN+F11, see the "Scroll Lock on keyboards without a Scroll Lock key" section.

PS2: For laptops without LED indicators or with tiny LED indicators you can use the utility Keyboard LEDs to see them on screen.

Whilst you could try the on-screen keyboard, that's not suitable in a game..having re-read your post..
However- you could use that to see the status of Scroll Lock when testing... the key background changes.

1.webp

To see that on screen: Win CTRL O or Win R, osk

FWIW Fn + K seems to work for me.

Unfortunately it has to be a key combination to video game would use. It's for an emulator emulating old windows 98 games. The scroll lock turns on game focus so I can switch from pressing keys for emulator control and pressing keys for game control.

If the game has a CTRL + K command I would switch to the emulator and now my keys do things in the emulator and not in the game. Fn is one of those keys I never see a game require so it's perfect for switching to an emulator.

My computer is a model "hp 255 g8 notebook pc" by the way.

Currently that is what I'm using but it's really annoying to juggle the game emulator and the on screen keyboard. It was so convenient to just press two buttons and I could switch from emulator to game. I want that convenience back.

What about some key combination that is ignored by the game, such as CTRL+F12 or something? Or does the game takes full control of the keyboard and any other key combinations don't work?

In addition to the Fn + K that you've already tried, it seems HP uses these known combinations for various models.
  • Fn + C
  • Fn + S
  • Fn + Shift + C
    • If the standard Fn + C triggers a different action (like copying), adding the Shift key often isolates the Scroll Lock function.
  • Fn + Pause/Break
    • Check the Pause or Break key (usually near the top right) for a small lock icon; if present, press Fn + that key.
