Defender definitions problem?

I normally check for Windows updates a few times a day, and get the Definition updates. I got the 1.387.968.0 update early this morning (UK time)
Checked again around 3pm, no updates. Went onto the Defnitions update site (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates). This showed that 1.387.978.0 was available, even though it didn't install through WU.

I updated using the mpam-fe.exe download, this was version 1.387.978.0

Checked again for updates earlier, no updates. Website is now showing 1.387.968.0 as the latest and it's this version of mpam-fe that now downloads. Release notes for 1.387.978.0 are still available on the web page.

Any idea what could be going on here?

MS probably pulled them for further tweaking.
That's why the release notes are still there, and why .978 is not yet on WU.

I remember seeing similar pulled updates in the Windows Update catalog, even as far back as Windows 10 in late 2020.

Fair enough but they released it for download through the site! It is unusual to not get an update for what is now around 15 hours, normally get 2-3 per day (or more)

I understand what you're saying.
See my edit above. Things like this don't happen often, but they do happen.

If it's still weird tomorrow... then I'd start worrying about it.

I feel sure that others that "use" Windows Defender, will probably post in this topic if they think what you're seeing is seriously abnormal.



You could always set WD to update automatically...

I'm not worried there's a problem with my Windows install, clearly MS have pulled it for a reason.

EDIT: Just checked on my Beta VM and 1.387.968.0 is installed, not .978. I just hope .978 hasn't caused any problems

Fixed! New update 1.387.1073.0 installed without problems a minute ago. MS must have spotted a problem with the .978 update and pulled it.

..and two minutes later .1094 installed!

I had a feeling that might be the case.
I've seen them do that with Windows Updates too.

Glad it all worked out.
