Dell XPS 15 9520 Automatically Powers On With Lid Open?

I notice after I power off the xps 15 9520 and close the lid. Every single time I open the lid, my xps laptop powers on. Why in the world does it do that? Is this some feature it has and if so, how do you turn this off?



If so, why would they make this be default? Who wants their computer to power on by that? If you are carrying the laptop in a bag or anything and it turns on, obviously that isn't good. I mean that is what the power button is for. Are all dell xps 15 9520 laptops like this by default? Are all xps laptops like this now? I can't imagine more people prefer this?


Is this an issue that can be fixed without going to the bios or this is bios related?

Generally speaking laptops will power on when you open the lid. Why else would you be opening the lid if you didn't want to use the laptop? It's not likely to open far enough in a laptop bag to open on it's own.

If you really don't like it you can go into the Power Options and choose what closing the lid does. Opening the lid and closing the lid are the same. Either it powers off and powers on, or it doesn't.

Power Options in the Control Panel.

The default setting when closing the lid is Sleep, so the computer obviously/naturally "wakes" when you open the lid.

Well laptops back then never did that. So now that is the norm? I did have a chromebook that did that which is why i was surprised. But I didn't expect windows laptops nowadays to do this.


Also I am talking about when you shut down the laptop as you go to start menu and shut down. That is the same as sleep and hibernate? Someone had said I had to go to BIOS to fix this issue. So the power options in control panel would fix this?

You will need to check the Power Options settings to see for yourself in your computer
Control Panel > (System and Security) > Power Options. Look for lid closing menu options in left hand column.
And the options should include what to do when it's on power and/or on batteries.

My XPS 15 9510 turns ON when the lid is opened. This is the default action and is also what I prefer. With the Messenger Bag I'm using it is impossible for the computer lid to open until it is taken out of the bag.

As previously stated, you can set what you want to have happen in Power Options.

The default when closing the lid for my XPS 15 9510 is to go to Modern Standby.

If the laptop powers on, then it never was powered off. I agree with TraderGary that the laptop is going into Modern Standby. I had an incident where my laptop got very hot and wouldn't power on until it cooled off. I thought for sure it was cooked and would never work again. Needless to say, I will never use Modern Standby again.

Sorry to hear that, @Winuser. Which of your many computers had that incident?

My XPS 15 9510 has been my main computer since I got it on Feb 23, 2022. Modern Standby has worked without incident. I use it for long hours every day and am frequently mobile. I have an extended Premium Dell on-site warranty, so if Modern Standby ever fails or cooks the computer, I'm fully covered. And, of course, my "System Two" is my backup computer if that were to ever happen.

It was my HP Envey x360 Convertible. I was planning on using it again that night, so I left it plugged in and just closed the lid. The next day when I tried to use it, it was so hot I could barely touch it. I tried to run it so I could turn it off and then unplug it. It wouldn't do anything. I finally decided to unplug it and let it set. Once it cooled down it worked just as good as it ever did. It still had an extended warranty and I thought I was going to have to take it back to Micro Center for repair.

My laptop is mostly used when I go outside to my Man Cave (shed).

My System Two, Microsoft Surface Pro 7, also has Modern Standby. It was purchased new from the Microsoft Store on February 9, 2021, and I added 3 years of Microsoft Complete warranty coverage. Modern Standby has worked on the SP7 since purchase without incident.

I like Modern Standby and since I've had no problems, I'll continue to use it. If Modern Standby ever turns on me, I'll definitely make a post, but so far, so good!

I may be totally wrong; I think something was running in the background that caused it to overheat. I also found a reg hack that added an extra setting in the power setting and the laptop runs cooler than what it used too.

I have a Dell XPS 15 and it always powered on when the lid was opened, which I didn't want.

The solution was not in Power Options, but in the BIOS settings.

Yes I heard people said you had to go to bios. So the power option doesn't work?


Wait so this is called modern standby... but if you don't use your laptop for few days, does it drain your battery or not?

The Power Option does work in Windows 11.

Click on Start.
Type "Control Panel"
Open Control Panel.
Choose Power Options.
Choose What Closing the Lid Does

I've had my XPS 15 9510 since February 23, 2022. I use it every day. I have no idea how much battery is used if you don't use it for a few days. I only know that when I close it overnight there is no noticeable battery used when I open it in the morning.

You can find out by using this command
PowerCfg -a

S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] is an idle condition. It is not S3 Sleep. Think of how long your previous computer would stay powered up if you left it sitting there being idle. Well, S0 Modern standby is a bit better than that.
