Main laptop is dell xps 15 9520. It uses a dell usb c charger that is 130w. I also have an acer chromebook and the charger is also usb-c. It is a small charger so I assume it is either 45w or 65w charger.

I had both chargers connected to a power strip and the connected my chromebook's 45w or 65w usb-c charger into my xps 15. I notice the mistake when I noticed there wasn't a white light on the usb-c charger that displays right next to where it's plugged into one of my usb c ports on my dell xps laptop. I then unplugged the chromebook usb c charger and plugged in my dell xps 9520 usb c charger and it is charging and there is that white light that shows.

The thing is when I connected the chromebook usb c charger to the xps laptop, there wasn't that white light but I wasn't sure if it was charging it or not. It did show like a plugged in message I believe but I don't recall if it showed charging. I unplugged the chromebook usb c charger within like 10 seconds or so. So my first question would be... could my chromebook usb c charger actually charge my xps 9520 laptop? I assume no if it's 45w but yes if it's 65w but it would slow charge? However, didn't show any slow charge message when I had it connected for less than 10 seconds. My other question is could you cause damage to the xps 9520 laptop if you plug a chromebook usb c 45w or 60w charger to it even if it was less than 10 seconds? I assume not but if longer possibly? I heard you can cause damage to a laptop if you plug the wrong volt or something? But I believe someone said if you connect like a charger that is more watts than your normal charger for the laptop, only then you can do damage? Example dell xps 9520 uses 130w charger. If you plug in like a 240w or 300w charger to it, it would cause damage to the xps? What if you connect it say under 10 seconds? But if you connect longer, it would?

If both the USB-C charger and the computer USB-C port support the PD (Power Delivery) 3.0 standard, the charger can be of a higher wattage than the port, no damage will result if you connect them. This happens because the two devices "negotiate" the charging parameters, and select what are safe. And this is why you can talk about a "universal" USB-C charger for many devices.

If you connect a charger and its rated wattage is lower that the rated laptop port, the laptop may not charge, but no damage will result.
