Anker 737 Powerbank with Dell XPS 15 9520?

Have a dell xps 15 9520 with specs of i7-12700h, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, nvidia 3050. Old laptop was dell xps 15 9550 with specs of i5-6300hq, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, nvidia 960m?



I purchased a dell pw 7018 lc powerbank a while back for it. Reason is does usb-c charging which the 9520 does. Reason being I work online so if there is a power outage, I want power backup. Yes I know I have laptop battery backup but isn't that many hours. I normally use my dell xps 15 9520 plugged in with 2 external monitors but when power outage happens, well I have to only use my laptop.



My previous laptop was a dell xps 15 9550 from years back. I had 2 dell pw7015l powerbanks that I used with it. I remember when there was a power outage, I would connect it to my laptop and I would get around 1 hour 45 minutes of battery on it before it went out. I then did that with my other same powerbank and get the same amount of backup usually so 3.5 hours with those 2 powerbanks. My old xps 15 9550 would give me maybe 2 hour of battery at the most but it was mostly 1 hour 30 minutes. So I had about 5 hours of backup battery.



The thing here is when I tested using the new laptop during a power outage... the dell pw 7018 lc powerbank gave about 50 minutes before it went out. Then I would only have my laptop battery to work with until the power came back. So my question is why I only got 50 minutes of backup with it? Is it because the processor of the 9520 is much more powerful and power hungry than my old dell xps 15 9550 which had a i5-6300hq processor? So if I were to buy a cable that allowed me to use my old barrel pw 7015l powerbanks with the new dell laptop, it would still probably get 50 minutes of backup each? The only difference between the pw 7018lc and the pw7015l seems to be one is usb-c and the other is barrel only right? They both have 18000 mah?



Now my question is if I buy the anker 737 powerbank which seem to have very good ratings... how long would I be able to charge it to my 9520 before it runs out of battery? Note I would be connecting it to my laptop the moment there is a power outage so battery would be full at the time? It certainly would be more than 50 minutes right? But it won't be say 2 hours or more? I read the mah isn't that much more than the dell pw7018lc? Note I will also be doing something on the laptop while it is charging. Also someone said that if you wait till your laptop has 0% battery... a powerbank would use up more battery charging it from 0% to whatever compared to you just connecting it immediately to your laptop at 100% when there is a power outage. Can anyone confirm this is true?



Now could this even fully charge a dell xps laptop if say the battery is 0%? It matters a lot more if it's 0% and then you let it charge to 5% and then you continue using it while charging at the same time right? Anyone here have experience with the anker 737 and have a dell xps? Thank you.

That is a tough question to answer unless someone here had a hands-on experience with that power bank.
Personally, I have a portable power station that I could use with my laptop outdoor. I don't have to charge my laptop with it. I just plug in my laptop to it when my battery runs dry.

So you use your laptop while on battery and only connect to that powerbank when your laptop battery is low. What laptop do you have? Can you continue to use your laptop while plugged into that? Can it charge your laptop back to 100% while you are currently using it or it doesn't
have enough power for that? I assume if your laptop uses very little power, it can maybe even 2 times?


Yea I want experience from people who have the anker 737. But I also want to know from people who owned the dell pw 7015l powerbank and the dell pw 7018 lc powerbank. I was shocked that I only got 50 minutes from the dell pw 7018 lc powerbank with the newer xps 9520 while the battery was full at 100% and I connect to it when a power outage. I was told that it is better to connect a powerbank to your laptop first and then use the laptop battery at the end because it uses more power if it is charging the laptop from 0% compared to if it is 100%. The thing is the old xps 9550 with the older pw 7015l powerbank in the same scenario... I could get 1 hour 45 minutes. So the xps 9520 has to draw at least twice the amount of watts compared to the old xps 9550? Want to know if it is worth buying the anker 737 or if it probably won't even give me more than 1 hour max?

I have an ASUS Zenbook and I don't use it to charge my Zenbook. I use it as a direct power supply (I use the plug) only when needed.
But in your case since you are using it for work, I think you should invest on UPS. Those portable power supply will probably not fully charge your laptop. Portable chargers are just for emergencies and won't last long. You can also use the UPS to power your router if you need to continue working during power outage.

BE VERY CAREFUL with the Anker 737!

I just received a brand new Lenovo laptop. I had the laptop for precisely 7 days and thought that I should just verify that my Anker 737 power bank would work well with that laptop. The instant I plugged it into my laptop, the laptop died. I mean killed it stone cold dead.

In addition, I found it to be incompatible with a number of devices.

What is the model of your lenovo laptop? What specs are it?


Did you ever try the anker 737 with any other laptops before your new lenovo laptop? How much was your laptop battery before you plugged the anker in?


So you purchased it because you want extra battery backup when you go outside? So when this happened, your laptop just turned off and won't turn back on? Would you be able to return your lenovo laptop back or you can't because the anker 737 caused it? You also going to return the anker 737 or you can't?

1) It's a Lenovo ThinkBook 13x Gen 2, 12th Gen Intel i7. It has 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports, either of which can be used to charge the laptop.

2) Yes, I tried it with other laptops and it did work with the other laptops I tried it with One was an older 15 inch HP Spectre x360 (7th gen i7), and the other was an ASUS Celeron based model. However, I have had compatibility issues with other devices (not laptops).

3) I have had the Anker for a while already - since Oct 2022, so because of the age, Anker would normally not offer a refund but in this instance, they offered a 60% refund which I'm jumping because there is no way, no how, that I am trusting that device again.

As for the laptop, there is no way to know for sure that the Anker really was at fault and not the notebook. Since this was a brand new laptop, yes, Lenovo is replacing it with a new replacement. It is taking a little while, however, so I am patiently awaiting word that a replacement was shipped.

Hey thanks for that information. So you have used the anker 737 for a long time before the new laptop then. What compatibility issues you had with other devices? You mean like tablet or iphone? So it worked with every single laptop except the new lenovo laptop?


Did you buy it directly from anker or from amazon? But you spoke to anker directly for the refund right? So it isn't even a 1 year warranty? Were they willing to send you a replacement?


What did you tell lenovo though? Did you mention the anker or that isn't a good idea? Do you know anyone that used the anker and had this happen to their laptop?

Now anyone else used the anker 737 and have experience? Someone tells me that with the anker 737 with the xps 9520, I probably get 20% more backup battery compared to my dell pw 7018lc powerbank. So if I get 50 minutes on my dell pw 7018lc powerbank with the xps 9520, the anker 737 only would give it probably 1 hour 10 minutes. Does that sound accurate?


That seems very little for a huge powerbank... but I know the xps 9520 has the i7-12700h processor so it is power hungry. But if the laptop was an older i5 like the i5-6300hq, it would last many hours? What if the laptop was a ryzen?

If I were you, just get the 737 from Amazon and test it yourself. You have 30 days to return it and get your money back if it doesn't meet your expectations.

The thing is if you return it within 30 days, what does amazon do with it? They sell it used?

But does it sound right it would be around 1 hour 10 minutes of backup on the dell xps 9520? So there are no powerbanks that would get a laptop backup power for hours?

It should be the least of your problem.
You have a bigger one in front of you right now. I am just saying, there is only one way to find out. Other's experience may not be exactly the same as yours. YMMV.

What is the rated power output of the powerbank in use, although modern devices are switching to USB-C powers connections they run much higher voltages than the standard 5V USB output we have used for years EG my Dell XPS 17 requires a 19V input from it's USB-C mains adaptor @4.5A. I have other items that use more with standard connectors - one of my external hard drives uses 24V @6A via a standard Round 12V type Plug/Socket

The power supply used must match the device powered, never assume that if the plug is the same the power available is also the same
