Other than Fences and Portals, I may be wrong but I know of no other software that does what you are seeking , not for free at least. However I am like you , I despise subscription based software and only purchase lifetime or perpetual licenses when it comes to software.
If you look at Stardock's Fences , they do offer a permanent (lifetime) license for $29.99 (U.S.) ... It's better than paying a subscription fee for something that rarely gets updated. And the current version is 6.02 , so you have some ways to go before the next major version change ..... theoretically

I use ObjectDock which, the last time I looked, was still a one time payment. One of the few of that payment type left over at Stardock.com


(If that payment type has changed then please let me know)

I've used it on Windows Vista, 7, 8.1, 10 and 11 and find it's essential for me. Great for quick access of those programs that I use frequently over & over again.

PS: I don't mind paying for software, but I'm not gonna pay for the same thing over & over again.

What's worse is when they change to subscription based and don't honor your previous Lifetime license!
I got screwed over royally by Mailbird in that case!

A LOT of us got screwed like that when Macrium changed to a subscription based service

Apparently Lifetime pertains to the life of the major version, not your lifetime!!!
