Evening All,

Very odd behaviour with new installation of Windows 11. I just need to bump my desk and the desktop computer comes on.

Used Brink's Option 2 - Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Control Panel.

Any further suggestions.

With thanks, ms:unsure:

When you say shutdown, do you actually mean sleep? A shutdown is power off.

If you actually mean sleep here's what I did. I could also bump my desk and wake pc from sleep. It was due the the sensitivity of my cordless mouse. The vibration of the desk was enough to activate a signal from it. What I did was to go into device manager,Right click on Keyboard>Properties>power management tab>make sure "allow this device to wake computer" is CHECKED.
The do the same thing for your mouse. Make sure its box is UNCHECKED.
This allows you to wake from sleep by hitting any keyboard key. The mouse will no longer wake PC.

Hi glasskuter,

Yes, actual shutdown in "power off". My equipment is plugged into a surge protector and battery backup.

I'll check my keyboard and mouse.

Thanks, ms

That sounds like a gremlin for sure.
Are you shutting down with the power button or selecting shut down from the power menu.? If you are able to duplicate the problem every time by bumping your desk, please try both methods of shut down to see if either shutdown method makes a difference.
EDIT HERE- I see you said you shut down thru power menu. Aso tyr power button shutdown.

Also verify that ALL lights go off on the PC.

If you can always duplicate the issue, connect the PC directly to an AC outlet, bypassing the surge protector and UPS and see what happens.

If connected directly to AC outlet, PC is completely off, no lights are on, you bump your desk and the PC powers on, goes through post and windows boots up, I have to say that is an absolute new one on me. The only thing it could possibly be related to is your power button switch or cable connection from button to motherboard.. I'm just throwing out ideas here but maybe your power button is stuck to a point or the contacts of the switch are light enough, just vibration turns on power. I mean a switch is a switch...contact open=on, contacts closed=off.

Now if any lights stay on after a complete shutdown, IMO your PC is not in a power off state. That's a horse of a different color. IMO that would point toward windows/hardware not turning the PC completely off even though you tell it to turn off.

Since I'm hoo-dooed about this, hopefully the hardware guys will step in with better advice. But when you solve it, please post what you found.

I had a couple of other thoughts. Try resetting your UEFI bios to default.

Also, Unplug PC , drain the capacitors by holding down the power button 15 seconds. See if it still happens.

Hi glasskuter,

I have to agreed about the gremlins. It didn't happen in Win10!?

Here's a screenshot of my BIOS.
Try resetting your UEFI bios to default.
I'm not too sure how to do this part.

Here is the page from your motherboard bios manual. I had to take it in 2 screenshots. One is a an overlap of the other and repeated.
You never did say whether all your lights go off when you shut down the PC.

Also open a command window as administrator and enter powercfg -a
Post a screenshot of results.

You say this did not happen in 10. When did your upgrade to 11? Has it been happening since you upgraded or is it a recent issue?

Afternoon Glasskuter,

Many thanks Glasskuter. Installed Windows 11 - January 18th this year.

Unfortunately, my computer is too far from a direct wall plug, therefore, the use of the battery backup unit.

Quick question as to resetting the BIOS: Prior to installing Windows 11, I had to change the TMP in the BIOS. Will resetting it back to the original default setting alter the TMP?

Power Options are a little different the AMD Ryzen - Restore Defaults not there.

Cheers, ms:-)

Do you mean TPM? If so, no,resetting the BIOS to factory defaults doesn't clear the TPM. All it does is set all your bios settings to the way they were from the motherboard manufacturer. If you or anyone else changed any of those settings, your changes will be lost.

Installed Windows 11 - January 18th this year.

Unfortunately, my computer is too far from a direct wall plug, therefore, the use of the battery backup unit.
But has this issue existed since Jan 18 and when you say you installed Windows 11, was that a clean install or an upgrade? Sorry for so many questions but it's all in the details for us have to have a complete picture of what led up to the problems you have as they all have bearing, even the fact that you can't connect the unit directly to AC to test with. Some troubleshooting depends on process of elimination.

I've flagged another user. Hopefully he or someone else give you advice soon. I am far from an expert in hardware while others here are.

It sounds to me like a loose connection or component somewhere - perhaps in the power button itself, perhaps in the cabling between it & the innards of the computer.
What happens if you kick your desk while the computer is running?

Hi Glasskuter,

No problem with all the instructions. I truly appreciate all your help. Yes, it was a clean install of Windows 11 - Home.

I did unplug and hold down the button for a few seconds to power off.
Also, Unplug PC , drain the capacitors by holding down the power button 15 seconds. See if it still happens.

I did have to tweaked my BIOS for the TPM 2.0 (typo in post). I assume, therefore, it would be lost.

Thanks so much, ms:-)

Okay, a few pieces of diagnostic information we can gather...

Start by opening a command prompt as Administrator. Run this command:

powercfg /lastwake

In the example below, notice that I run this command twice. The first time I run it, it says Wake History Count - 0

This is because I booted my system from a shutdown state. After running that command, I put my computer to sleep, then woke it by tapping a key on my keyboard. I then ran the command again and got the message you see in the screenshot. The idea here is to find out if the system was really shutdown or if it was merely sleeping.

Image1.jpg

If you wouldn't mind grabbing a screenshot of the powercfg /lastwake output I would appreciate it.

Next, please do the following:

Shutdown the system. Take a note of the time that you shutdown the system and write it down. Wait at least five minutes and then "bump" the computer to reproduce the problem that you described. Write down the time that you did this. The purpose of this is to create a gap in the Windows logs so it should be pretty obvious when the system is powered back on by the time gap.

After the system is back up, right-click on Start and select Event Viewer

Image2.jpg

Navigate to Windows Logs > System

Image3.jpg

Right-click on System and select Save All Events As...
Save it someplace easy for you to get to like your desktop. Name it whatever you want.
Note that you will be asked if you want to save Display Information. Select the options as shown in the second screenshot below.

Image4.jpg

Image5.jpg

Create a ZIP file and add that event log that you just saved to it. That should make it a lot smaller. Post that ZIP file here.
In addition, in your post, note the time at which you shutdown the system and when you "bumped" it causing it to turn back on.

I will look at the log. I'm looking for some specific things.

One more thing...

Open a command prompt as Administrator one more time and again run the powercfg /lastwake. Does it say Wake History Count - 0 or does it say something else?

Good Afternoon hsehestedt,

Many thanks for helping out.

I have followed your instructions as noted above. See attached zip folder.

The second powercf /lastwake was 0.

Moved everything around in order to plug my computer directly into the wall. Also checked all the wires to make sure they are connected inside the case. Unfortunately, I can't access the on/off button wires unless I remove my two dvd drives. Compact case.

Oddly, I could not recreate the problem right now.

Best, ms

Thanks for gathering this information.

Below are a couple enties from your log. Note that the times might be translated into my time zone, so I don't know if they reflect accurately for where you are. I am in the United States, Central Time Zone where it is now about 3:30 PM.

First entry, most recent, shows that a shutdown had occurred:

Image1.jpg

However, earlier today there was a transition from sleep:

Image2.jpg

So, maybe we need to look closer at how you are shutting down your system. But at least this gives a clue and we know that the system is not always being completely shutdown.

I guess that I would be curious to see what happens if you went to Control Panel > Power Options and disabled all three of these options:

Turn on fast startup
Sleep
Hibernate

Of course, I intend this only for testing, but worth a shot.

Hi hsehestedt,

I'm EST - one hour ahead of you.

Under Power Options I had already turned off Fast Startup and Hibernate. I have now turned off Sleep.

I shut down: 1) right-click the Windows Start and select "Power Off" or 2) click on Windows start and power off.

Cheers, ms;-)
