Disable Windows 11 Updates??

I have an older PC (with i7-2600 CPU). With some struggling I have got it updated and running Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100-1742. Updated using Rufus to work around TPM issue...

Currently my PC is trying to download and install a cumulative update KB5055523 (which I believe would take Windows 11 to build 3775) - however recognizing that the CPU does not conform to any newer updates I would think I probably shouldn't do any further Windows updating on this PC.

Couple of questions -

1) Am I right? Will this KB5055523 update work or would I be pressing my luck and run into the recent MS update changes to block older CPUs?

2) Are there any future security updates that I should be looking for and installing that won't cause a problem? How could I tell?

3) If I'm at the end of the road for Win 11 updates what's the best way to disable further updates - presumably using gpedit to disable Windows Updates?

Well, several answers:

• I'm not a fan of installing W11 on old, unsupported HW - not sure what the point is - especially if it runs W10 effectively and efficiently. Having said that, it's your system and if you're happy with the result and performance, so be it.
• Windows Updates include security updates, so it's always best to keep current.
• If you're unsure of how your system will react to updates, the best option is to create disk images prior to installing any updates. Then, worst case, you can always return to prior state.
• To permanently stop updates, run services.msc and disable Windows Update.

You have 24H2 installed so you will get 24H2 updates until they stop releasing them. All updates should work fine without disabling anything due to hardware on your PC.

Nobody know what Microsoft could release but to answer your question, No.

You’re not at the end of updates.
25H2 may be a different story, I couldn’t say.


If you really feel that you need to; One way to disable updates is to monitor them:


I use WAU Manager to take over from Windows Update. It’s lightweight unobtrusive and simple to use.


After checking the small box at the top to allow WAU Manager to take over, checking the “Normal” option below it, you can click “Update Windows Now” and it will show you the available updates before proceeding. You can chose not to proceed or select updates to install.
It can also uninstall updates & check for installed software updates.
