No security program can guarantee 100% success because there's always something new being released. MS does do a good job of keeping their security program up to date and as a added bonus, it's free.

I reserve clean installation only if there are too many issues or malware or I do 2-3 unsuccessful attempts to upgrade. This is because to backup my data, reinstall and reconfigure everything from scratch will take me a week (not enough free time). Not my my first choice, only on a typical office PC with 3-4 applications to reinstall and only tens of GB to backup. Not on the average home computer, not in mine.

That's exactly why I try my best not to have to do a clean install on my main desktop computer. On my old desktop it would only take a few hours. I do have one program installed that I don't know if I could reactivate it or not. The programmer of it passed away and his wife doesn't know anything about running the business. I do have the program saved so I can install it. The problem is that it has to be activated to run and that server may be shutdown.

There are uninstallers that search the Registry and file system and display all traces of an application. Isn't there a similar utility but instead of uninstalling the application takes a full backup and let's you restore it? This would eliminate the need to activate again, assuming you restore it on the same computer and doesn't deactivate.

I asked a question earlier.

I'm about to clone my SSD C drive which has my OS on it.

I am cloning it to another Internally connected SSD, which has data on it I no longer require.

Do I need to delete this data before cloning or will the cloning process do it for me, overwrite everything?

Cloning will overwrite it.

I have to admit that I have no idea. I did find out that although the website and forum is no longer online the person working with him setup a website so users can do a online activation so it can still be activated. Not sure for how long though. There was a time a few years ago that I did have to do a clean install on my old desktop. For what ever reason I couldn't update it to the latest Canary build. I waited for the next build and still had the problem. Even using my Macrium images of builds I had upgrade from before didn't work. Doing the clean install using a ISO of the latest build had me back and running a few hours later. The one thing I didn't like is that I lost all of my free Software of the Day programs. They could only be loaded once and within a certain time limit.

My new MB will be with me some time today and clone of SSD OS was successfully completed and didn't take long at all, to test it I will alter the boot start up and try boot from it.

Meanwhile can someone help me?

When I restart my PC I put in my Window login password but on the same screen, bottom left there appears to be two accounts, the one circled in red I use to get me to my desktop.

I don't no why there are two accounts, ( I'm calling them that ), I want to clean it all up and at the same time do away with having to enter a password every time I start the PC.

What would the other account be? see image.

To transfer you digital licence from the old machine to the new build, first switch to signing in with your Microsoft account on the old machine (if you do not already do so).     UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

If you had previously set up the PC to sign in automatically, then a second name may appear at the sign in screen. This is not another actual 'account', rather an artefact caused by having automatic sign in set up with an incorrect name or password.

Set it up again if you want to sign in automatically, when correctly set up there will be just the one name at the sign in screen. Or remove automatic sign in if you just want to sign in normally.

Thank you, I have yet to upgrade to Win 11 but will probably disable sign in when I do.

If you have an OEM copy of windows, with enough of a hardware change (like CPU and mobo), you usually have to buy another key. If it's a retail key, you are allowed to move it from one machine to another. If problems arise, it's usually a call to Microsoft who will help you with the activation.

MS previously allowed Windows 7 and 8 licenses to be used to move to 11, but they no longer allow those. You can however go from a windows 10 license to windows 11. If the hardware stays the same, you can install 11 without using a key and when your hardware scan happens and your digital fingerprint is uploaded, it would be the same and 11 would just activate based on your old license. With your hardware change, that won't happen automatically as the identification will be different.


Windows is expensive. A legit key from MS is going to cost $139 for Home edition and $199 for Pro. You can find places on the web that will sell keys at very substantial discounts. These keys are clearly "not-legit" based on their pricing, using they are multiple activation keys that are being sold questionably. Most times they work just fine, and will activate. They may not activate 2 years later when installed again on a new machine but with the massive savings on the key purchase, most just accept this risk and assume they can just buy another cheap key in the future.
