Well, you just added the payroll mechanics. You may not be personally responsible for writing the report, but the report is always needed to show what work is done for what kind of $. The report is thus a rightful justification to get a paycheck. The report is not an excuse to get a paycheck, that's a strange notion.

Anyway, the report is a good source of what work is done in IT.
I know for local government the payroll department only needs the hours worked and at what pay rate. There is no reason that the head of the department would have to make up a reason for the workers to get paid. If your park is clean and well-kept, then the workers must be doing something. If not, maybe the town needs a new head of the parks department.

Thank your head of department for writing the work-for-$ reports to get the paychecks signed, even if you never saw those reports. His head could indeed roll if his reports failed the audits.

You have no clue and IMHO you feel that public works employees do nothing but waste your tax dollars. Try walking a mile in our shoes than you can comment.

I might scrawl on a note somewhere what I just installed or updated so I can undo the change. After that, I lose the note if everything seems to be going well. So, my diary is very fleeting.

For things that I do infrequently, things that I need to look up on the web how to do it, etc., I generally write up what I am doing while I am doing it so that I can back track if something does not go as planned, or do something differently the next go around.

I keep the notes (and even write a short summary) only at the very beginning of setting up the machine.

At subsequent events, I lose the notes. I think there is a case to be made to keep the notes and write a short summary at subsequent events, too.
-------------
Beyond that, and beyond doing backups, what preventative maintenance do people do? For example, I took notice of some people doing clean installs every year, and pros having service contracts including doing clean installs every six months. I would certainly scale that back to whatever makes sense to me, just wonder what makes sense to me, LOL

I reinstall only when necessary. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I do routine backups twice a week when I know everything is working as intended. I run cleanup tasks regularly with Norton and System Mechanic. That's about it, though. Things seem to be working well for me with those few things I do.

I like to do clean installs several times a year and whenever I think I might possibly be compromised. This takes very little time as all my data is kept on OneDrive and is instantly there the moment I log in to Windows. App installs are quick as my Internet connection is reasonably fast at 700/24.

I reinstall only when necessary. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I do routine backups twice a week when I know everything is working as intended. I run cleanup tasks regularly with Norton and System Mechanic. That's about it, though. Things seem to be working well for me with those few things I do.
I also follow don't-fix-what-is-not-broken which is an after-the-fact method. I am exploring a preventative do-the-work-even-if-there-aren't-any-problems method. It will always be a bit of both, I think.

I like to do clean installs several times a year and whenever I think I might possibly be compromised. This takes very little time as all my data is kept on OneDrive and is instantly there the moment I log in to Windows. App installs are quick as my Internet connection is reasonably fast at 700/24.
Don't you have to spend time configuring your apps?

It doesn't take me long to set things up the way I like.
I'm just an amateur photographer.
I do all of this for my own enjoyment.

I have been involved with many systems (Networked), ( from a couple of devices to several hundreds or thousands of different sizes over the years and it was expected to have everything fully documented, down to a very granular level, this was a major task to keep up to date but it was demanded by the nature of the useage.

Items were purchased in batches, of identical setups and hardware, but this was not the case with batches of hardware over longer periods as technology advances. This would often go to a level where the serial numbers of components ( hard disks and motherboard levels ) and obviously the allocated licences were managed.

At home now I run just a desktop and a laptop, ( See my Specs ), and I still maintain a list of the software and their allocated Keys, ( though most licences for the software I run are supplied with multi device activations, either concurrent use or either/or useage - install on more than one system, but only use one at a time )

I have a spreadsheet of my 3 desktops, 1 server, 3 laptops & 1 tablet (NIC iPad).
I track what OS & apps is/are on each partition on each along what to press at POST to display the boot menu (ex. F8).
Ex. Main Rig has 6 OSs on it, some are dedicated to certain tasks.
I also track which build of the OSs on a separate worksheet/tab.

Edit: All my Win11 OSs are on (4) external drives that I plug into a PC, restart, press F8, choose drive then from the Boot menu for that drive which Win11 OS I want to run.

That's the gist of this thread, executed on a scaled down household level or perhaps small biz level.
