just now upgraded successfully completed from windows 10 to windows 11 (23H2). But copilot is missing or may be didn't install while upgrading windows 11.

Then... last night I joined the Release Preview channel and then checked for updates.
I got 2-4 updates... ended up on 22621.2500 ...still 22H2.

And throughout all this... I had the "Get the latest updates... " thing turned ON.

Then I restored from a backup... again. So I'm back to 22621.2428

The in-place upgrade should bump you up to 22631.2428. But I haven’t yet looked to see what the difference is.

Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

A good backup for me would mean to clone my entire 480GB SSD on a spare disk at least once a week, so if everything bad happens I can restore 98-99% of my system. I don't have this kind of backup (shame to me...) but it makes sense to do one such backup right before I upgrade my main PC...

Strange...I just did this last night on my Stystem One exactly as I wrote it up, worked perfectly.

Don't think account type matters, @starchase did it with a local account.

What's the name of the ISO you downloaded?

You are the guys and gals. I used the second option and downloaded the ISO file to a folder on my desktop, used WinRar to unpack it to the folder and clicked on the start.exe and as if by magic... 23H2

2. when it is done copying open the folder. Go to the Sources folder and you want to replace the appraiserres.dll file.

3. to create the file open any Notepad type program and I just type a few characters in a file and save it as appraiserres.dll (make sure it doesn't have a .txt extension added). Then replace the existing file in Sources with this new one.

4. finally, run the Setup.exe file and you are on your way to an In-place Upgrade keeping your existing programs and settings.

Easy peasy.

Worked for me however i add to use win rar to change the appraiserres.dll file . just opened it up selected all then delete. just typed some random keystrokes and blammo. had 23h2. only draw back is i had to use the insiders beta to get the co pilot feature to work .unless i am missing something .

I have never found that anything needs to be entered into the appraiserres.dll file. Just an empty blank file has always worked for me.

John, I have tried to update to 23H2 using this method and ran into a problem. I created a folder on the desktop and you mention in step 1, then I copy the ISO to the folder and try to copy the file I created in Notebook to replace the apraiserres.dll, but I get a message that there is not enough space on the disk to copy the new file there. I also can't delete the existing apraiserres.dll because I don't have permission. Is there a certain way I have to copy the ISO to the new folder? It seems like just copying them there to the new folder has mounted the ISO and it won't let me change the appraiserres.dll file. I tried just copying everything to a thumb drive and running the setup.exe, but it went through the motions and I still have 22H2.

I do it a bit simpler than that.

I just open my ISO with any application that supports opening and editing of ISOs (e.g. PowerISO, UltraISO etc.) and replace the appraiserres.dll with the dummy one and save it. I then mount it to run setup.exe.

I don't do work like that on the system drive. I do it on my backup / data drive.

Thanks, I'm not sure if that is beyond my skillset or not. I could try that. I just don't see how others were able to edit the dll file after copying the ISO to a new folder.

Here's what I did on on my unsupported laptop. Copied the ISO to my desktop and used Winrar to extract to Windows\ (it will create the folder on the desktop.

Open the Windows folder and now you can replace the appraiserres.dll file with a blank one.

Navigate back to root of the folder and run setup

You could also use 7zip.
Hope that makes sense.

You only have to delete the original appraiserres.dll and copy the fake one there.
Alternatively, you can copy and replace.

But from what I can understand from your previous post, it seems that you may have a permissions problem using the desktop to do the work. Also, check your drive for free space.

Even if this MIGHT give me 23H2, I rather not risk it and wait for the ISO. Everyone else do it at your own risk. It gave me 23H2. I just did my old Asus laptop last night.

Maybe so, maybe not. I tried it last night on one machine and it stayed on 22H2. MS may have closed this loophole now
