Installation and Upgrade Download Official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft

This tutorial will show you how to download an official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft.

Microsoft provides ISO files for Windows 11 to download. You can use these ISO files to clean install or in-place upgrade Windows 11.

Option One

Download Latest Windows 11 ISO using Media Creation Tool


This will be for a Windows 11 Version 23H2 build 22631.2861 ISO file with install.esd.


1 Click/tap on the Download button below, and click/tap on the Download Now button at Microsoft's site for Create Windows 11 Installation Media. (see screenshot below)

2 Save the MediaCreationTool_Win11_23H2.exe file to your desktop, and run it.

3 If prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes.

4 Click/tap on Accept for the license terms. (see screenshot below)

5 Uncheck the Use the recommended options for this PC box. (see screenshot below)

Leaving the Use the recommended options for this PC box checked will have the Media Creation Tool download an ISO that's the same language, edition, and architecture as the current PC.

6 Select the Language and Edition you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

The Windows 11 option includes both the Home and Pro editions. The product key you enter during installation (Windows Setup) is what determines which edition gets installed.

Your digital license or product key determines if Home or Pro gets installed during Windows Setup.

If you skip entering a product key during Windows Setup, then you will be prompted to select to install the Home or Pro edition.

7 Select (dot) ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

8 Select where you would like to save the ISO file to, type in a name you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Save. (see screenshot below)

9 The Windows 11 ISO file will now begin to download. (see screenshot below)

10 When the download has finished, click/tap on the link where you selected to save the ISO file at to open that location, and click/tap on Finish. (see screenshot below)

Option Two

Download Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft


This will be for a Windows 11 Version 23H2 build 22631.2861 ISO file with install.wim.


1 Click/tap on the Download button below.


2 Select Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO for x64 devices) in the Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices drop menu, and click/tap on Download Now. (see screenshot below)

3 Select the language (ex: "English") you want, and click/tap on Confirm. (see screenshot below)

Download Windows 11 Insider ISO from Microsoft


1 Click/tap on the Download button below to go to the Windows Insider Preview Downloads site by Microsoft below,


2 Select the Windows 11 Insider Preview Canary, Dev, Beta, or Release Preview Channel ISO for the build number you want, and click/tap on Confirm. (see screenshots below)

Download Windows Server Insider ISO from Microsoft


1 Click/tap on the Download button below to go to the Windows Insider Preview Downloads site by Microsoft below,


2 Select the Windows Server VNext Preview ISO for the build number you want, and click/tap on Confirm. (see screenshots below)

That was the optional preview update that 22H2 was offered on 26th October. Because you (and my unsupported System Two) got 23H2 early with the in-place upgrade trick we were running an RTM build that didn't officially exist yet, and as such Windows Update would not offer us that CU when it was released.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Correct (y) 🙏

I’m looking forward to doing a full install (kind of looking forward to, with less emphasis on excited) as apposed to the current upgrade from Windows Ten that I am using. It’s a mess with errors going on all over the place, but I’ve been hanging on for this ISO

The reason was that the update was only marked on the update servers today as being appropriate for RTM 23H2, as until today our 23H2 didn't officially exist :wink:

Yes, that is perectly normal. The system files for 22631.2428 are the same as 22621,2428 but that ISO also contains and will will install the 23H2 Enablement Package, turning on the dormant 23H2 features and bumping up the build to 22631.

DISM /get-wiminfo is known to report a different WIM version than what's actually inside.

You need a script to extract the offline image's registry to report the true values for Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\CurrentBuild & UBR. This happens with other Windows releases, too. I'm not sure why they do it this way.

@Brink, MCT for Win 11 23h2 has changed.
Option 1 now is equal to option 2 and install.esd has been replace back to install.wim.
This means that a USB Win 11 install drive now must have two partitions (One Fat32 and one NTFS)

I had just tested MCT, but it was still 22H2 for me with an install.esd.

Just to confirm, did you click on "Download Now" for Create Windows 11 Installation Media (MCT) at the link for Microsoft in Option 1?

Can I ask a Question... How is it that Microsoft *Doesn't only provide UEFI but have the ability for third party programs to have MBR Support? As with Rufus/WINTOUSB

No, I have selected to download the iso file.
It can be that to create a USB it use a install.esd and on the iso it use a install.wim. I haven't try the create a USB option.

Ah, that's why then. That wouldn't be using MCT, but just directly downloading the ISO like in option 2 instead.

MCT still only giving me 22621.1702 (files dated May 5th). EN-GB/UK locale.
Direct download is the new ISO.

Using a 22H2 Notebook, I saved the .iso file, Mounted it and it has the install.wim in Sources. I also used the MCT to create the bootable USB Thumb drive and it has the install.esd in Sources. Both creations were in the same 3 hour time frame on 10/31/2023. The .iso is 6.5GB which requires a DVD+R/DL disc and the USB is 4.8GB which requires an 8GB or larger drive.

I just tried the MCT I got on 10/31 on my 23H2 Notebook and looks like it will have no problem downloading again. I didn't get the same first pages as shown here, I'd try a new download of the MCT.

MCT isn't broken, the simple fact is MS hasn't updated this link:

When MCT runs, it downloads products.cab and checks what versions to offer. That's how MS forces you to download the latest Windows, even if you're using an older MCT tool. You have to wait until that file changes from products_win11_20230510.cab.cab
