Installation and Upgrade Download Official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft

This tutorial will show you how to download an official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft.

Microsoft provides ISO files for Windows 11 to download. You can use these ISO files to clean install or in-place upgrade Windows 11.


The Flight Hub can also help you keep updated on which Windows 11 builds have an ISO available.

Option One

Download Latest Windows 11 ISO using Media Creation Tool


This will be for a Windows 11 Version 23H2 build 22631.2861 ISO file with install.esd.


1 Click/tap on the Download button below, and click/tap on the Download Now button at Microsoft's site for Create Windows 11 Installation Media. (see screenshot below)

2 Save the MediaCreationTool_Win11_23H2.exe file to your desktop, and run it.

3 If prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes.

4 Click/tap on Accept for the license terms. (see screenshot below)

5 Uncheck the Use the recommended options for this PC box. (see screenshot below)

Leaving the Use the recommended options for this PC box checked will have the Media Creation Tool download an ISO that's the same language, edition, and architecture as the current PC.

6 Select the Language and Edition you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

The Windows 11 option includes both the Home and Pro editions. The product key you enter during installation (Windows Setup) is what determines which edition gets installed.

Your digital license or product key determines if Home or Pro gets installed during Windows Setup.

If you skip entering a product key during Windows Setup, then you will be prompted to select to install the Home or Pro edition.

7 Select (dot) ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

8 Select where you would like to save the ISO file to, type in a name you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Save. (see screenshot below)

9 The Windows 11 ISO file will now begin to download. (see screenshot below)

10 When the download has finished, click/tap on the link where you selected to save the ISO file at to open that location, and click/tap on Finish. (see screenshot below)

Option Two

Download Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft


This will be for a Windows 11 Version 23H2 build 22631.2861 ISO file with install.wim.


1 Click/tap on the Download button below.


2 Select Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO for x64 devices) in the Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices drop menu, and click/tap on Download Now. (see screenshot below)

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to go to the Windows Insider Preview Downloads site by Microsoft below,


2 Select the Windows 11 Insider Preview Canary, Dev, Beta, or Release Preview Channel ISO for the build number you want, and click/tap on Confirm. (see screenshots below)

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to go to the Windows Insider Preview Downloads site by Microsoft below,


2 Select the Windows Server VNext Preview ISO for the build number you want, and click/tap on Confirm. (see screenshots below)

I need to do a Repair Install of Win 11. I'm doing it because of a deep problem with Bluetooth.
When I check winver it shows Version 21H2 (Build 22000.739) I couldn't find that build in the Official ISO files list from MS. Additionally, when I view the installed key it looks ok, but I get a popup that "No OEM key in Firmware".

With these two Whoa! warnings I don't want to go ahead with possibility of my key being denied.
When I purchased my NUC "bare bones" I installed Win 10 and recently I installed Win 11 without problems.
Do I have a problem with Repair Install? . If so, do you have recommendations?

Are you able to update to the latest build 22000.778 below? If so, it may hopefully fix the issue without needing a repair install.

The update resolved the problem after I had spent a week troubleshooting! Bluetooth is restored.
Is there an organized way to follow these updates? Will they usually appear in Settings>Windows Updates?
Finally, could anyone comment on the possibility that I have an "illegal" Windows Pro because I got the notice "No OEM key in Firmware"? Is the build I downloaded today now "legal" or do I need to take other steps?

The "No OEM key in Firmware" message just means there's not an embedded OEM key in the UEFI firmware chip. What matters is if you used a legal key or digital license to activate Windows with. You can check Windows activation status using an option below.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I downloaded the Windows 11 2022 Update multi-edition ISO and noticed that its editions have the build 22621.382.

I noticed, however, that going to the Windows 11 - release information website, the build of Windows 11 22H2 should be 22621.521.

How come this inconsistency?

On a supported device, if you let it upgrade through Windows Update, or with the ISO while online, then Setup checks for updates and incorporates the .521 CU in the upgrade.

If you use the ISO on an unsupported device, then Windows Update sees the .521 CU, but unfortunately there's an error on the update servers and the download will fail. You can however get the standalone version of the CU from the Update Catalog and install that instead to get to 22621.521.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Beta as native boot vhdx.
