DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION

Hey everyone,

I've been trying to debug this BSOD but unfortunately got as far as I could with my current knowledge.

The error I keep getting 100% of the time is DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION. For context, when I built the PC about a year ago I used to get this error. Managed to resolve it by uninstalling gigabyte app centre. 2 months ago it started happening again, I noticed app centre was back due to an option on the motherboard to automatically install it, so after removing it it dissapeared again.

Now it is unfortunately back and app centre is gone so I have run out of options.

I have also tried updating all drivers to the latest, and run /sfc scannow.

Some addiotional info, using bluescreenviewer points to ntoskrnl.exe. Additionally, I've analysed the dump using windbg and that one points to USBXHCI. I've tried reinstalling the usb root hub drivers but that didn't help. One behavior that I've noticed is right before a BSOD, all my usb peripherals stop working, and I can see the game continue to work, but then 20 seconds later a BSOD hits.

Logfiles are too large to attach. You have to zip the logfiles and upload to a cloud provider. Then post a link here to the file.

Run the software on the applicable drive (run all tabs) > post images or share links into this thread


3) Run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial version)

1) Done.

2) When I installed this one it did mention there was new firmware for my Samsung drive which I did install (this isn't reflected in the screengrabs). Then I ran everything under device management for the Samsung drive (couldn't run it on the other drives as they are not Samsung). Let me know if that is fine =D. 3) Took screenshots of the tabs for the samsung drive as that is my main drive (C drive), let me know if you want them for other drives. You'll see I attached multiple overview screenshots and that was just me scrolling down on the top left so you could see the health status of all the other drives. The HD Sentinel testing indicated problems with ST3500413AS.

110 bad sectors
38995 communication problems


Make sure that the important files are backed up to another disk drive or the cloud.

If possible please replace the disk drive cable and / or the disk drive.



Disk drives can be used until the terminal event as long as data is backed up to another disk drive or the cloud.

Problems that could occur before the terminal event may be:
a) slow read
b) slow write
c) hangs
d) freezes
e) unexpected shutdowns and restarts including BSOD
f) data loss
etc.




If there were no additional BSOD since replacing the misbehaving driver then this will complete the troubleshooting.

If there are additional BSOD then detach the problematic disk drive and monitor computer stability / instability.

For any new BSOD post a new V2 share link into the newest post or open a new thread.

Thanks for the assistance, haven't had a BSOD in a few days so can mark this as resolved!

I had extra space on other drives so I just removed the problematic one, figured it's one less piece of hardware to worry about.

Out of curiosity could you let me know how you figured out the driver that needed to be reinstalled? That way I can add that to my debugging list of things to try if it happens again!

The Microsoft software WinDbg was used to debug the dump files.
The driver reported earlier in the thread was identified during the debugging as the cause of the recent BSOD.
The drive problems and problems with Windows fast startup were seen in the collected log files.
