This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the in-app web browsing feature in the Copilot app for all users in Windows 11.

The Microsoft Copilot app is your AI app for work. Copilot connects to the Microsoft 365 apps and content you use every day, creates polished documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, gets things done with Cowork, lets you choose between leading AI models, understands your job and company through Work IQ, and keeps your data protected.

When you sign in to Copilot, your experience adapts to your account: a licensed work-or-school experience with enterprise data protection, or a personal experience for individuals, with or without a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription.

Microsoft Copilot app now supports in-app browsing on Windows 11, allowing users to open websites side-by-side with chat. Users can manage tabs, toggle full-screen, or open links externally. Data is stored locally, similar to Edge.

Websites that Copilot shares in chat can open inside of the desktop app side by side with the Copilot chat conversation.

Users can still open a link in an external browser, by:
  • Hover on link within Copilot Chat, click/tap on "More actions" (3 dots) button, and selecting "Open in browser" option from menu.
  • Hover on link within Copilot Chat, click/tap on "More actions" (3 dots) button, and selecting “Copy Link” option from menu, and pasting it into an external browser.
  • Right clicking a tab in the browsing side pane within the Copilot app and selecting "Open in default browser".
  • Right clicking a tab in the browsing side pane within the Copilot app and selecting "Copy URL" and pasting it into an external browser.
You can disable the web browsing capabilities in the Copilot app if wanted. When disabled, clicking on links in a Copilot chat will open in the default web browser instead of in Copilot.

You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable web browsing in the Copilot app.

7 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

8 If the Copilot app is currently open, then either quit and reopen the Copilot app, sign out and sign in to Windows, or restart the computer to apply.

9 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink
