Solved Errors 0x800f0831 when installing KB5016629

Just to let you know, I tried completely uninstalling Malware Bytes and it didn't make a difference. In fact I had MB running on my other machine which is a laptop when I did the KB5016629 and there was no issue with the update. It's the most bizarre thing with zero clue aside from the fact that it fails somewhere in the first_boot phase. Not sure what windows does in this phase of the boot cycle but maybe there's a clue there if there's a way to capture a log.

I'm looking at my update history and don't see it and nor was it pushed automatically to me. Do you suspect that may be the culprit?

Not that particular update. I just downloaded it but, there's no installer in it just a bunch of files in the archive.

KB5016629 still fails in the Windows Update. Even if I try to download it (Microsoft Update Catalog) and install it through DISM, I get error 0x800f0831.

Should we hunt for some other KB to install?

No, not all. You've been very helpful. I am holding my hopes on 22H2. Way too many folks are having installation issues and updates should never be this complicated with so many weird requirements. I have a backup image that I revert back to after fooling around with different ideas if it doesn't work, so I am eager to try things. Plus it's a good learning experience.

do yo have old network driver? try to update it.. also try manually installing while network adapter is disabled KB5016629 Windows 11 22000.856 [Manueller Download] Sicherheitsupdate August 2022

My network adapter has the latest driver so that may not be the issue. I tried disabling the firewall as I came across something on the web. Since it's failing in the the first_boot phase of the boot operation it's hard to tell without looking deeper into an error log. If you have any insight to that, it'll be helpful since we've exhausted just about everything we could think of.

try disabling .net 3.5 through dism and manual install

Believe it or not, I actually managed to solve the issue in a rather simple way.

What I did was performing a fresh W11 install (in-place upgrade) keeping all files and settings, but rather than getting the latest build via UUP dump I just downloaded the most recent ISO from Download Windows 11 and just running it.

The fun thing is that now the problematic KB5016629 update doesn't show up anymore, but it's replaced by KB5016691 (which I'm pretty sure I didn't have before).

Maybe it's worth a try if you have similar issues?

Yes I've fixed updates that way before. The MS ISO will do an in-place upgrade even if the minor build number is higher than the ISO version. Checking for updates after will install the latest patches again.
