I have a software program that is just an .exe that I double click to run. It doesn't get installed. I downloaded the latest version. When I double click it, I just get the Windows circle for a few seconds and then nothing. The previous versions of the program, I had to check Windows 8 compatibility, before it would run. The program is actively worked on, so I don't know why it had worked with compatibility for Windows 8. The program works on my Windows 10 PC.

Is there any way I can debug this problem? A log file in Windows? I would like to know what happens after I double click it.

Thanks

You could try looking in the Windows Event logs to see if anything useful is getting logged there. Other than that, since this is an actively maintained problem, it might be worth contacting the author to see if they can provide any help in troubleshooting this.

I couldn't find any events regarding this application.

I installed the previous version that had been working, but doesn't now as well. Does the same thing.

Maybe exclude that program in Norton 360?
Norton 360 may be blocking it for some reason?

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I turned Norton off.
The application runs on my friends PC, which is the same model as mine, running Windows 11. So it's only my PC that it doesn't run it.

I have a software program that is just an .exe that I double click to run
Two things, one is that if it is a publicly-available program say the name, helps to know if anyone else has the same problem. The other thing, which may or not apply, some program installs come compressed and the program that does that, like WinZip, can convert a .zip file to a .exe file which then decompresses to a drive before starting the install routine.

Another thing to do when having issues is to run sfc /scannow to check for missing/corrupt Windows files which could be preventing the install.

The program's name is PixelFlasher.exe. I just download that file from Release Release v5.8.0.1 · badabing2005/PixelFlasher. It's not compressed. I use it to flash monthly updates to my Pixel phone and maintain root.

I ran sfc /scannow and didn't find any errors. On my Windows 10 PC, I just mapped to the drive on my PC with the program and ran it from there. So there is nothing wrong with the file I downloaded.

I opened the property settings for the program. Under the General tab, I noticed in the Attributes, it said that this program came from another computer and was blocked. I checked the box where it said "unblock". The program ran fine after that. The unblock attribute is no longer listed in properties.

The unblock attribute is no longer listed in properties.
You'll find that happening in other places as the choice becomes unnecessary, disappears.
