Explorer with excessive spacing between folders

No matter what I do to search online I cannot find how to make the folders anywhere near the Windows 10 spacing. This is in 'compact view' mode too. Why is there so much spacing in the lefthand side, and how to I get the original spacing back?

Hopefully someone else can shed light on this as I don't know the answer, but could you tell me what kind of a system this is on? I'm experiencing the same issue on a tablet where it seems to insist in staying in tablet mode and won't come out of it even if compact view is enabled.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Yes, thank you. It's crazy annoying. So much spacing, it looks I guess like 'tablet mode'? But don't know how to force it out, or just reset?

Using compact view does help, but it does not seem to help as much as it did in 23h2. Even with compact view set to on, unless my short term memory is gone, I think the space between lines is wider than in 23h2. From the looks of your screenshot, I don't think you have compact view on. Click VIEW on toolbar, select SHOW>check Compact View.

At least in my case, I had checked all 3 and they are all set to use compact view.

@gifty7474, I still don't have the details on what type of PC you have. I see that you list your system as a laptop, but does that laptop have a tablet mode. For example, can the screen be rotated back 360 degrees to make the system operate in a tablet mode where the keyboard is then located on the back side of the laptop?

I think that is the point: Compact view is turned on but Windows refuses to use compact view, At least that is the case on my tablet.

I have seen this behaviour in my tablet running Windows 10 32-bit 22H2. Search for Tablet mode and make sure is switched off.

Thank you. I wish it were that easy. I've tried all options to turn on compact view. It does reduce spacing in the right hand pane, but the left still has crazy spacing.

  • Close any file Explorer windows and open Registry Editor.
  • Navigate to - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
  • On the right side of the window, find the UseCompactMode value and double-click it.
  • Make sure it is set to 1 (on)
EDIT: That’s most likely in the reg file in the tutorial. Check anyway.

WinSetView is a File Expolrer software written by one of the ElevenForum members, @LesFerch

That's nothing to do with compact mode.

Do you have Solidworks PDM installed? It's known to cause this problem.

I thought they removed the ability to disable tablet mode. There are some settings as far as I know but not to disable it?

It is impossible to manually activate or force tablet mode in Windows 11 settings, as it once was in Windows 10.

Therefore impossible to manually disable it? As far as I know Windows 11 automatically activates it when it detects tablet mode, the end?

There are settings, but the closest I have found with my Dell is “Optimise settings when in tablet mode” I am not 100% sure that unchecking this disables tablet mode. My Dell is currently partly disassembled so I can’t check.

I mean it has nothing to do with the excessive spacing in the Navigation pane. I think the OP confirmed that compact mode was already on, so my money is on Solidworks PDM.
