Hello!
I bought an external Pioneer BDR-XS07TS BD-R XL drive that can read and burn all disc formats from CD to Blu Ray quad layer 100GB. I tested with CD and DVD discs and was OK. Today I bought an UHD Blu Ray movie and tried to play it. After several seconds spinning the disc, it couldn't read it and it eventually ejected it. I tried a different USB port and on another computer, didn't make any difference. I don't have another Blu Ray disc to test or another UHD Blu Ray player to check the disc, so I don't know what to do. Should I return the movie for a replacement or the drive? Please help me.

Do you mean a copy protected movie disk?

Support for UHD Blu Ray disks on PCs seems to have been mostly eliminated.

I have an LG internal drive that can read UHD movie disks, but I had to revert to older firmware to allow that. I did it mostly as an exercise, as I have a standalone player and a UHD TV.

You may be able to find up-to-date advice in the MakeMKV Forums. I vaguely recall that there may be a tool that makes it unnecessary to hack the BIOS of a drive to permit it to read UHD disks.

Well the movie is original newly bought probably copy protected, but I only tried to play it. Should I use AnyDVD to bypass protection in order to read it? This is ridiculous for a legitimate original movie, but I will try tomorrow as local time is 1:11 and I should be sleeping. Thanks anyway.

Have you tried this player? Leawo Blu-ray player

It appears to not support UHD movie discs. (It does play 4k files, but that's common.)

PlayerFab Ultra doesn't list any particular BD drive requirements, which seems odd. I wonder if it has some means of bypassing the limits of most current BD drives? (I doubt that the Chinese source will give you a refund if it doesn't work for you.) It's also not free.

PowerDVD Ultra also claims to play UHD BDs, but it's limited to a 7th generation Intel CPU with HD 630 or Iris 640 integrated graphics.

The problem is the disc is ejected after several seconds of not be able to identify the type of it. It doesn't give me access to the contents. If I did I could play is with PowerDVD. Most likely the disc is faulty. I will return it for a replacement.

Your drive is not UHD capable. You need to Cross-Flash to BDR-XS07TUHD.

As far as i know need this one to play UHD Blu-Ray

Was right you can't i even tried my internal BD player with UHD disc can a regular blu ray player play 4k

Check the link to drive firmware that I posted above. You might have firmware available. There is also drive utilities available which might indicate that your drive is working (or not). I got FW and the utility for my XS07TUHD. The utilities allow you to set, reset, and check some drive parameters.

Sh!t... I downloaded the UHD Advisor and turns out that the drive is not UHD compatible. I downloaded the respective UHD model firmware but it won't let me install it. I could only upgrade to its own 1.02 firmware which of course made no difference. If you know of any tools to allow me cross flash the UHD firmware, please tell me, otherwise I will have to return the movie for a standard Blu Ray disc.

Hello! What do you mean my drive is not UHD capable? It can read and write all the layers up to quad layer 100GB discs. What more is needed to play 4K discs?
Your Blu-Ray drive is not compatible to play or record 4K UHD discs this one is https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Electronics-BDR-XS07UHD-Portable-Supports/dp/B00FGVPTHW
Why it shows UHD even in the model number
Your Model
https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-BDR-XS07TS-External-Portable-Blu-ray/dp/B081JX3C7W

It’s like a Blu-Ray disc won’t play in a regular DVD player (non-Blu-Ray).
As far as type of discs you’ll need to use in a 4K UHD Blu-Ray burner i am not familiar with burning a 4K Blu-Ray movie to a Blu-Ray Disc. All you have to do is look at specs of both players see what type of discs can be used.
BD-R and BD-RW most common being used as far as dual layer and XL check specs of individual players.
As said as far as type of Blank disc to use to record 4K UHD Blu-Ray movie to a disc i am sure it’s different than one used in a regular Blu-Ray player.

Many of my 4K movies are in file type, .mkv. Can plug in external USB drive to PC or 4K UHD Blu-Ray player hooked to 4K TV and play movies. I am not sure worth buying a 4K UHD Blu-Ray Burner as discs are becoming a
dying thing, read about it.

Back in the late 90's recordable DVD-R discs were expensive and the alternative to record standard definition on a disc that plays in most standalone players was to burn a DivX CD. This contained the movie in standard definition compressed with the DivX codec (MPEG 4) that could give almost DVD quality with a fraction of the bitrate of MPEG 2 (DVD standard). The audio was usually compressed to MP3. Similarly, to avoid using an expensive BD-R disc you can write High Definition video on an AVCHD-DVD. This contains High Definition video compressed with x264 (aka AVC) or the x264vfw codec which is the respective video-for-Windows (VFW) compatible codec. The audio is usually in AC3 (aka Dolby Digital) format. Both DivX CD and AVCHD-DVD play on most standalone Blu Ray players. I am curious if there is a respective disc type for 4K video. I know most standalone UHD Blu Ray players can just read an MKV or MP4 file from a USB flash drive, but is there any way to record 4K video on a standard BD-R disc or even a DVD-R disc? Creating a data disc (UDF format) with an MKV or MP4 video file would work? Anyone has tried it? Thanks in advance.

There are products that claim to be capable of compressing a UHD movie to fit on a BD25 (single layer BD), retaining the 2160p resolution. Example.

I've never tried anything like that.

Moot unless you have a UHD capable PC drive.

This program is the equivalent of good old DVD Shrink for UHD discs. I could also use DVDFab. I wasn't talking about this. Let's say you have a 4K video camera and shoot an event, such as a birthday party. If you want to give a copy of the video to friends you have to either downsize to HD and create an AVCHD-DVD or to standard definition and create a DVD disc. What if you want to give a 4K version of the movie? Obviously you don't want to share a USB flash drive. Can you just burn an MKV or MP4 video file on a disc? Will it play on a consumer UHD Blu Ray player? Has anyone else tried to play such a disc in his player?
