File explorer "see more" tab always opens upwards 24H2

Hi all

I'm on 24H2 with Insider RP build 1882. When I go into File Explorer and click on the 3 dots in the address bar for "see more" the tab always opens upwards. Hence if the window is at the top of the screen, the options are not visible. I have to drag the screen down in order to see them and when I do drag, there's a black bar appears at the top of the screen. Happens on all 3 of my PCs. The view button opens correctly.

Hi.

You could try taking the Window out of maximised state, making sure it’s smaller than the screen size. And for no real reason, click the 3 dots again.
Now close Edge the way it is (Not maximised and smaller then the screen)
Open Edge, maximise it and see if the problem continues.

Worth a try.

Did you update graphics drivers recently?

Hi

It's File Explorer and not Edge. Indeed I can see all the options, provided I reduce the size of the window so there's room at the top for it all to display. The option I was needing at the time was "select all". Have not upgraded graphics drivers recently. The view tab next to the 3 dots opens correctly.

Hi

The option I was looking for is "select all" and this isn't in the old or new versions. Right-clicking on the screen gives the same output as right-clicking with shift pressed.

Sounds like a bug in Explorer for that build. You could try removing KBs until you find out which one causes it

It's patch Tuesday in a couple of days - let's see what comes with that.

EDIT: Have checked the feedback hub, and it's been reported with version 26120.1843 which I assume is a Beta or Dev version

I have the same problem on both desktop and laptop. The KB5043178 caused that and i hope they will correct soon....

Change it to classic ribbon and back again using the reg files in Option Three

I'm on 24H2 with Insider RP build 1882. When I go into File Explorer and click on the 3 dots in the address bar for "see more" the tab always opens upwards. Hence if the window is at the top of the screen, the options are not visible. I have to drag the screen down in order to see them and when I do drag, there's a black bar appears at the top of the screen. Happens on all 3 of my PCs. The view button opens correctly.

I'm seeing it in the Dev build 26120.1930 too.

Another workaround is to click the ... 'see more' then use the up arrow on your keyboard to select the item you want. Even though the list is off the top of the screen, the 'info-text' pop-up telling you what you have selected is always visible. Find the one you want and press Enter.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Yes that's workaround thanks. If the problem still exists in the latest Dev build, I suspect it won't be fixed next Tuesday .....

Indeed this issue was not fixed on patch Tuesday with the 2033 upgrade, nor on Thursday with the 2152 preview build. There are 4 PCs in our household - 3 desktops (8th and 2x10th gen Intel) and a recently-acquired Dell laptop for travelling which has 13th gen Intel. All 4 have the problem and all were upgraded to 2152.

Ever since I bought the Dell 3 months ago, I've been minded to clean-install Windows 11 to finally remove all the bloatware. I've done this today and very pleased with the result. One surprise however, is that it no longer has this issue even though it's on 26100.2152 like the other 3. Don't understand how this can happen - perhaps the problem has come about with a registry issue?

You could try taking the Window out of maximised state, making sure it’s smaller than the screen size. And for no real reason, click the 3 dots again.
Now close Edge the way it is (Not maximised and smaller then the screen)
Open Edge, maximise it and see if the problem continues.

I tried that no difference this is a really annoying problem and easy to fix from Microsoft why on earth they don't pull there fingers out there bums and fix it.

As I said in my previous post, a clean install fixes it. So seems not like a simple bug. Annoying perhaps, but liveable with.

As an aside... I think the Release Preview channel is 26120.xxxx
26100.2033 is the regular (non-Insider) 24H2 channel.
