Finally installed 11 today

But there is a history of OS's and "great/not so great, great/not so great, etc.

My background in computers goes back to "BPC" (Before P C's) and to an IBM 360/20 and IBM 2260 terminals.

I worked with dumb terminals and IBM mainframes so I have some past experience too. FWIW, this is a decent OS and follows a very good OS, Win10. I think MS did a nice job with this and they did it in a short period of time.

Honestly, I did expect much when they announced this. It's just what I expected they would do and... I like it.

As others have mentioned - visual style is a personal POV. Whether it 'deserves' the 11 tag rather than say 10.1 or 10.2 we can debate until hell freezes over.

The problem I have is the attempt to effectively outlaw some of the older indeed current PC's. You could be forgiven that Microsoft were in the pocket of the hardware manufacturing folks but that's just a conspiracy thought on my part. On one of my spare rigs I'm running 11 which according to Microsoft has a CPU that is too old even though new laptops are still being sold new with it. So go figure me on that one.

No doubt once the official release time comes round and for folks that like 11, there will be a software hack floating around. For me though I'll probably stick with 10 whilst Microsoft deal with any adverse publicity.

Yeah, with these pre-releaase builds they are not enforcing the hardware requirements fully.


So, as of right now, it makes no difference, really. Only when the final bits are out can we say for certain it will or will not run on older hardware. And I'm pretty sure that, as long as there are no major hurdles, even un-supported hardware will still be able to run Windows 11 in its official release capacity, because techheads everywhere will work hard on finding work-arounds.

Click on Add New Entry - Give the OS a name - Point EasyBCD to the drive with the OS. Then go to Edit Boot Menu - Select the OS you want as the default - Select Use Metro bootloader if you want. If I remember right if you don't select Metro bootloader you will get the old Windows 7 boot menu. Select the time you want the boot menu to wait for a response and click Save Settings.

Edit: Almost forgot. Click the + sign on the right side of the box where you select the drive with the OS.

Well, didn't happen like I thought it would!

When I restarted, Windows 11 was still on top, but Windows 10 was highlighted. All I had to do was hit Enter.

I just added Safe Mode to my boot menu. The only thing different was while setting up Safe Mode in the Advanced Settings I had to click on advanced and change the setting to safe mode.

@Wynona Under Edit Boot Menu you can change the order of the entries.

Just reinstalled 11 today due to several bits and pieces not working on the first install of it. So far the only non functional bit is Microsoft Edge which is not really a problem at this point. the notification center is at least working and I spent entirely too long today getting apps to work. so far the only two that flat refuse to work for me are a TikTok app from the microsoft store and Microsoft Edge. after install there was a blank spot where the edge icon was supposed to be and clicking on it did nothing. I tried repairing Edge to see if that would fix it and it didnt. I tried "reinstalling" it from the app store but just get an error trying to do so. I dont think its the app stores fault honestly because so far VLC and SPotify and a couple of others worked right out of the box.

Thoughts on 11. I like the UI loads better than 10. to get 10 "useable" for me I had to use startisback which I dont feel the need for with 11. so far things work fairly well and the search function actually finds what I am looking for when I need it to. I will warn you that if you like the game Bejeweled twist be prepared for it to suddenly stop working for no apparent reason.

Thanks! Sounds easy enough, but I don't trust me very much when it comes to these things.

I'm learning, but not very fast. :)

Clean install is easy for me, and I probably should have done that, but I didn't.

Make an image first then try it.

So far, I've succeeded in getting Windows 10 on top of Windows 11 on the double ugly black & white dual boot page, but so far, that's about all.

I'll try some other stuff tomorrow, then I think I'm going to do a system restore from Macrium and do a clean install of Windows 11 to the new partition I made. I'm not totally sure I'll get the boot menu I want, though. But I'm gonna keep trying.

Oh, I already have my image. I installed Macrium Reflect 8 and immediately did a backup.

I dunno, Edwin, but I keep getting this:

I don't understand what it means but I think it's a way to make me pay for it. I'm not gonna pay $30 for something I'll probably only use once. That is, if it even works for me.

OK, got what it looks like in this Tutorial by Brink: Dual Boot Windows 11 with Windows 10

And now, I'm tired of messing with this thing. At some point I'm going to do a clean install of Windows 10 and Windows 11 DEV Channel. I'll deal with it then.

Oh, yeah, and EFI vs UEFI! I went into BIOS and saw the following:

UEFI HII Configuration

Intel Rapid Storage Technology
This format allows the user to manage RAID Volumes on the Intel Raid Controller

Realtek PCIE GBE Family Controller

I don't know if I should change any of this or not.
