I have just had a message from the Feedback Hub saying that they are looking into our suggestion of showing the folder contents on the folder the same as Win 10. I found that a really useful feature as I could look at a row of folders and quickly find the one I wanted. Anyway the message said they are looking into this and the icon does change to show a slip of paper!!!!! Apart from the fact it is barely visible without my glasses I do not have any empty folders that I create for files, also it serves no purpose as I still cannot see what is in them, just if they have anything in them. At least they are looking into it and hopefully they will deem it to be a useful feature for 11

I'm not sure what you mean by showing folder contents?

Could you elaborate or point me to a relevant post about this issue, thanks.

Hello, :-)

I believe he's referring to thumbnail previews on the folder based on the content of the folder.

Unfortunately, thumbnail previews are no longer available for folders in File Explorer.

If it may help, you can still change the icon of the folder.

@trumpy81 On windows 10 I had several folders with icon in them all for different categories, on the front of the folder it would show a picture of the icons inside, or documents or what ever the contents were. It has been in previous threads before

Thanks for the clarification. I don't believe I have ever seen that in WIn 10 or Win 11.

I do have several folders with customised icons, but I have never seen a thumbnail preview of the contents of the folder?

What am I missing here?

I am guessing it may be related to the type of view you have setup in File Explorer?

I personally use Details view everywhere and most, if not all, folders are set to 'General items' with customised columns and column widths.

@The-Hive

I am still unable to find any sort of preview thumbnail for a folder in Windows 10.

This is the closest thing I see to any thumbnails showing the folder contents.

Untitled-1.png

I have tried a number of different view settings etc. but I still do not see any thumbnails?

Could you walk me through it please, or perhaps provide a screenshot of what I should be seeing.

I have the following settings in File Explorer, Folder Options:

Always show icons, never thumbnails = disabled
Display file icon on thumbnails = enabled
Display file size information in folder tips = enabled
Show hidden files, folders and drives = enabled
Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items = enabled
Show preview handlers in preview pane = enabled

Someone has already beat them to it:
Sadly it was the same as the other one I tried very unimpressive, out of 3 folders, 2 did not change and the third just showed something in it, hard to tell what the contents were. It was not what we were looking for as it didn't show the contents on the folderScreenshot 2021-11-16 161716.png

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help :)

Clearly, I did misread the initial post and I was looking and hoping for something a little more useful.

@Brink
