My faithful self built pc is now 12 years old with a M4A79T Deluxe which runs Windows 10 Home does not have TPM or Secure Boot because it is Legacy BIOS only I would have to spend a lot of money to be able to have Windows 11.

I don't think I will upgrading to Windows 11 any time soon! Windows 10 life has 4 years to run yet and my pc does everything I need to do as far as computing is concerned but I will still be interested on how things develop for others in this forum and elsewhere. Thanks a lot Microsoft NOT.

If there is something you can bank on is that with every obstacle MS puts in the way, a new workaround surfaces - it's just the way of the techy world

^^^^^^^^^ This. Always note that Microsoft refers to Windows 11 being supportedon these CPUs, with these specifications. It does not really ever say that you will not be able to install and use via a workaround or 3.

Indeed. And there's always just sticking with Win10, too....

There's a distinction here that is, IMHO, not being emphasized enough. There are two different sets of PC requirements regarding Windows 11: those to RUN it, those to INSTALL it.

I have an old Legacy PC, upgraded from Win7 days, and of the list of requirements in the third-party checker, it fails FIVE of them. So, I have to jump through lots of hoops to get Windows 11 to install.

But once installed, it works FINE. No problems. No issues. And I expect this will continue, for at least a few months, because MS is going to be making Windows 11 available to Insiders that are currently running the Win10 Dev or Beta versions. I am running both (on separate drives). So that means I probably will continue to be able to run Windows until it gets released.

So, if you're willing to do some work, and/or join the Insider group, you probably WILL be able to run Windows 11 on legacy equipment for several months to come.

I do have faith in the techheads around the globe - someone, somewhere, will find a way to make it work on hardware that Microsoft would prefer it not running on.

But I also fully believe that, if you run into issues, and try to get help unsupported machines running W11, the official answer will be "Sorry, W11 is not supported on your machine."

Mine is about the same age as yours but with 16GB and a Phenom X6 1100t. It would only cost me ~ $300 to replace the Memory, CPU and M/B with a used Ryzen 5 2600. I could sell the old memory and CPU for $200 so net cost would be $100

I really hope your prediction comes true on this -- as I was very disappointed today when my attempt to upgrade my Win10 Dev install to the Win11 Preview failed immediately with the Secure Boot and TPM messages. I though that stuff was going to be waived for us Insiders so we could test Win11 without having to buy new hardware.

If that was only $100 for me, then I might consider it -- but with my 10-year old desktop, it's more like $1000 -- as I would have to replace the motherboard, processor, and memory -- and is way too much for me to continue to be an Insider.

Hi folks
I'd forget about the CPU issue if most of the other tests pass. A 6 year old computer / laptop should still work --TPM has been around for Donkeys years - whether anybody actually used it or not - another issue.

Just download the iso from UUPDUMP and try and "manually install" -- Backup existing system first of course. Otherwise try and install in a VM.

Cheers
jimbo

I had massive issues with my install.

I had to revert to my Win10 backup because the leak refused to get upgraded to the new dev build.

But I'm on it now. If I didn't need my backup work laptop absolutely ready to go on a moment's notice, I'd try to force it to upgrade, as it has every requirement except that it has a 6th gen Intel CPU and TPM 1.2. But I cannot afford to have it down for any length of time.

If that was only $100 for me, then I might consider it -- but with my 10-year old desktop, it's more like $1000 -- as I would have to replace the motherboard, processor, and memory -- and is way too much for me to continue to be an Insider.

Depends on what level of replacement you require. Looking at Newegg, you could get an (AMD) B550 motherboard for roughly $100, a Ryzen 3 3100 (Gen 3) for less than $200, and 16 GB of name-brand DDR4 RAM for about $100.

In the Intel line, you could get a B560 motherboard for about the same $100, and a I3 Gen 10 for roughly 150.

I haven't checked fTPM/PTT availability on any of those motherboard/CPU combinations, but I'd bet that they are present.

Looked at (maybe naively), you could get a Win 11 complaint hardware upgrade for $350-400US. If you want the highest-end components, $1k wouldn't cut it, even though scalper prices on those seem to be falling.

You're right about the prices -- but I am only able to update my PCs every five years at the fastest -- so I want to buy components that are not immediately obsolete next year. I was going to get a B550 board but then I read about the USB faults with those and the A570 boards, so it probably is best that I wait a while now before doing any upgrades.

eVGA is hinting at a new X570 board. it's the first real foray into AMD land they've done - they have always been Intel.

And, again, Windows 11 is not releasing any earlier than Oct, more than likely after that, and probably not before 2022 starts. And Windows 10 is supported through Oct 2025 - 4+ years.

You've got plenty of time to decide and build your next future proofed rig, believe me.

To be honest, Windows 11 was my trigger point in upgrading my 8 year old build. I always tell myself that my PC is fine (i7-4790K/GTX 1070) and I don't need to upgrade. That was more of a "want" at the time than "need".
Whether or not Windows 11 requirements will be enforced when it is released later this year, I am just happy that I am good for another 10 years. Bottom line, I feel less guilty spending some dollars because my reason is now more of a "need" and not just a "want" anymore.

I'm in the same boat, my PC runs very well, however MoBo Gigabyte GA-67A-UD4-B3 and CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU do not meet Windows 11 requirements, so now begs the question, do I upgrade my system or not?

A BIOS update fixed those USB issues. And currently performance per dollar, AMD is kicking Intel's ass.

I picked AMD for an entirely different reason - but I am not disappointed.

Of course, coming from an original 1st gen Core i7 965 EE on an X58 platform with 12 GB of RAM - I doubt I would have been disappointed no matter what I built last year lol.

To be honest, Windows 11 was my trigger point in upgrading my 8 year old build. I always tell myself that my PC is fine (i7-4790K/GTX 1070) and I don't need to upgrade. That was more of a "want" at the time than "need".

I just happened to get lucky when I built mine last year. I built it for longevity, and I'm happy to say that I am fully compliant. If I had not been, I probably would have been upset, considering my build methodology is always for future-proofing as much as is possible within the constraints I am facing when building.

3 year old Dell xps13 I7-7500 @2.7Ghz, doesn't make the grade for windows 11 due to the chipset and cpu, thank you micro$oft

As I noted in my post, quoted below, you ahve 4 years to continue to use Windows 10, as a fully supported OS. By that time your machine will be 7 years old.

eVGA is hinting at a new X570 board. it's the first real foray into AMD land they've done - they have always been Intel.
