Frankenstein project computer.

I have been messing with an old desktop for a while now. It started out as an eMachines ET1810-01 running Vista Home Basic. I have been changing out and adding parts as I go. Here are the changes so far.

Case: still the original

Optical drive: original

Motherboard: Original-- ECS model with USB 2.0, Integrated Nvidia 7050 Go graphics, SATA 1, and even an IDE header.
Now------Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2 , SATA 2, USB 2.0, integrated Radeon 3000 graphics

CPU: Original---Intel Celeron 420 single core
Now------AMD FX-6300 six core

Graphics card: Original--only integrated
Now-----Nvidia GT 1030 2GB GDDR5

RAM: Original--2GB DDR2
Now------16GB DDR3-1333

Hard Drive: Original--160GB Seagate Barracuda HDD
Now------500GB Seagate Barracuda HDD

Power Supply: Original---eMachines standard 250 watt
Now-------EVGA 500W3 500 watt

OS: Original-- Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit
Now-----Windows 10 Home 64 bit latest build

Add ons: Netgear AC wireless USB dongle adapter
Rosewill 4 port PCIe USB 3.0 card
Rear case fan: Currently the fan off of an AMD Wraith Spire CPU cooler, held in with twist ties. Soon to be a standard 120mm 3-pin case fan.

It's a pretty capable machine. The biggest surprise to me is how good the little GT 1030 card performs. I can play WoW at 45fps on low settings and Forza Horizon 4 at a locked 30fps on medium settings. That's on my 720p TV though. I only bought a few things new like the power supply, WiFi dongle, USB card, graphics card, and the case fan. I spent a total of about $210. The rest of the parts came out of my main desktop when I upgraded it.

So it's really not a Frankstein at all, just a reused case since all the components were all compatible.

Well they would have to be compatible to work and it's a Frankenstein in the respect that it's parts were pulled from various sources and some reused. Well, that's the Hollywood version anyway. In the book, the monster was not made from pieces of human corpses but rather constructed from animal tissue from slaughterhouses.

Nice. That's about how my last desktop had gotten, it started out being a home built Core2Quad machine with 4 GB RAM and a pair of 500 GB spinners, and an 8800gts GPU in 2008.

It ended its life as a cobbled together machine in June of 2020, when my current rig was built from the ground up - at that time it had 3 SSDs, a pair of 1 TB spinners, a GTX 970, a Core i7 965 EE with 12 GB RAM on an X58 mobo - same case from the very first one.

This one should last me quite a long time, I'm hoping, at least something close to that. I just upgraded all the NVMes from the Sabrent Rocket 4 first gen 1 TB to Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB, and all right before the contamination reports started coming out for WD and Kioxia. I'm betting even money that NAND flash based drives are about to get expensive as people start buying them up in mass quantities to scalp.

I'm going to resurrect mine to turn it into a home-brewed NAS, at some point.

To explain. In the book it says that human corpses were used as models from which to construct the creature. Frankenstein says the creature is 1/4 larger than normal because it was easier to make the parts on a larger scale. It was constructed with animal tissue from slaughterhouses. When Frankenstein is reunited with the creature later on, it can speak and tells him it was able to survive the winter in the wilderness because the teeth it was given were able to chew things like tree bark and roots. The method of animating the creature is also Hollywood invented. In the book, Frankenstein says he will not reveal how he brought it to life because he doesn't want anyone else to make the same mistake. That makes sense in the story but was also a convenient way for Mary Shelley to not write about scientific procedures she had no knowledge of.

I never read it since that genre never was my thing. In fact, I think the only movie I ever saw was the goofy one with Gene Wilder so not indicative of the original work at all.

Ahh, okay, that stuff was always my genre. In books, old radio programs (yes, I listened to and remember those from back in the 1950's), and movies and TV. I think I have seen every Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, Mummy movies and a lot more. I'm not into reality stuff. Reality is boring lol.

Really the hardest part of putting this thing together was connecting the front panel to the motherboard. The USB ports and sound jacks were easy but the power switch and it's green light were not so much. The old motherboard had different headers and I had to actually break apart the plugs and cut and splice some of the wires to be able to connect them in the right place on the new mobo. Then I couldn't figure out how to connect the card readers. There was only a 4 pin plug coming from them. I saw that the second USB header and the COM port header both had a row of 4 pins and a row of 5. I decided to try connecting the plug to just the 4 pin row of the USB header and VOILA, it worked.
