Hello!

I had some issues downloading in Microsoft Edge due to bad quality Wi-Fi and I installed Free Download Manager which still can stop download and cannot always recover, so it made a little difference. I remember in the past I was using GetRight downloader which had the option to enable 2-3-4 parallel downloads of the same file to speed it up. If the server for example allowed only up to a certain speed per file, with this trick you could get up to four times the download speed. Is there any downloader, preferably free, with similar functionality? As far as I know GetRight is too old and doesn't work on Edge.

Not free , but worth every penny if you have slower internet...IDM (Internet Download Manager)I've used it for years.I think I've gone through 4 computers with it
$25 lifetime license or you can pay yearly subscription. They update it regularly. You install IDM on your machine, then you install the IDM extension into your browser. (Note: if you decide to go this route and at any time IDM stops taking over your downloads, it means the browser extension needs to be updated. It doesn't happen often. You can try it free for 30 days)

Also with IDM, I got a message when I installed the extension on friday (new build) saying it was not going to be supported by MS and it was basically a virus!

I also have been using it for years as well, also I use (sometimes if IDM has trouble) Ant Downloader (paid), or FastDownloader if the OTHERS have issues!

How do I find this flag?

Edit: I found it, just type about:flags or edge://flags in URL field and then search for download to find the flag. It was default, I set that to enabled, just in case. I will see how it behaves next time I try to download something big. Thanks.

PS: Right now I am downloading latest nVidia driver. The speed seems much higher than previous times and the download has not been interrupted due to low speed. I think it worked, thanks.

Free Download Manager has the option "Maximum number of connections per server". Set it to 20.

I replaced my wireless USB dongle with another brand I had spare and now it seems to be a little better. I will let you know if I experience any issues again. Thanks. Free Download Manager downloads at 2-3Mbps, not great but much better than less than 400Kbps that it was before. Pity there is no option for 2-3-4 parallel downloads (segments of the same file in order to speedup download) as there was in GetRight.

"Maximum number of connections per server" option of Free Download Manager, is exactly that. You can set it up to 20 download threads (parallel downloads).

I bought IDM. It was worth it. But I always set to one file at a time. I just find it faster for obvuious reasons. But you can throttle the download speed and set it to max. I get up to 120 megabytes per second. But I have a 1Gb connection.

Yeah I know it isn’t free, Lifetime for USD$24.95 (Euro €22.25)
And lifetime means lifetime. I’ve been using mine since about 2005 with constant updates.

I was talking about breaking the download in two or more segments and download all segments at the same time, so if a site allows a certain speed per file you essentially get two or more times that speed. Much like when downloading with utorrent. In GetRight each of the four segments had a separate progress and you could see how much it has downloaded and how much still remains.

I really don't know why people need download accelerators today with the current download speeds that (I assume) most people get. One advantage is video download integration, but the new Video DownloadHelper browser addon that is available for all mainstream browsers is amazing and better than even IDM. It's not free, but the price is cheap.

I used to use IDM, but I had issues with it in Windows 11 that the developer couldn't fix. Plus, I couldn't see the benefit of it. It can get in the way sometimes. The new Free Download Manager is a crippled replacement for the old version. I still don't understand why they changed to an inferior model.

If you have a decent download speed, 3 Mbps or more, then I agree you don't need download acceleration. My main PC is in the living room and the rooter is at the entrance hall. I wouldn't dare connecting a long cable from the router to my computer, my wife would kill me! So I rely on a wireless USB dongle to connect via WiFi. Until recently I used a cheap dongle by PowerOn that had unreliable connection and download speed would drop below 400 Kbps, almost like good old ADSL or worse. Microsoft Edge would frequently quit downloading stating network issues, hence the need for a download manager with acceleration. I replaced that with a wireless USB dongle from Edup which seems much better. However now I have a different issue. I upgraded to 24H2 and I think my USB drives are affected or something else. The wireless dongle sometimes disconnects and the WiFi list is empty. After a while it works again but doesn't connect automatically, I have to manually connect to my WiFi. Other times the dongle is not detected and my system hangs temporarily trying to detect USB devices. I will manually reinstall my chipset drivers and see if that fixes the issue.

Enabling parallel download in Microsoft Edge worked, but still had issues due to very slow connection of my previous wireless USB dongle (IEEE 802.11n but of cheap quality and bad performance). I replaced it with a faster TP-LINK IEEE 802.11ac model that reaches 200Mbps speed and of course doesn't have any disconnections. Thank you all.
